Well, even if he didn't pick up on the sarcasm at least he was offended instead of delighted. That's a plus!
Anyhow, LA's a good city and I agree with there being more authentic ethnic cuisine--it may not be from a particularly renowned chef, but it's good down-home cooking courtesy of a large enough ethnic population to support such a cuisine in an unaltered form. And Koreatown is awesome--and as dense as any "real city" neighborhood (for those who really love density).

LA really didn't become important till after WWII. Chicago has always been a important city. I think it is because of the fact that Chicago is more dense, has a longer history, and it is the regional powhouse of the Midwest. They way I see it is this: Yokohama is larger than Osaka, but Osaka is seen by some people as being more "important" because it was for a long time the largest city in Japan, and a major financial center ( not to say that Yokohama isn't).
L.A. was actually becoming important before World War II.
It became the center of the movie-making industry pretty early on right after World War One (1918-1919). Although it was still in its infancy, it was booming then. It was just smaller.
But yes, Chicago became big long before LA did. You can look at skyscraper shots of Chicago, and while its totally different from today, it does look somewhat recognizable. LA in 1920 looks about the way Bakersfield is today (but that would quickly change).
Chicago sucks. who wants to live in a ciy that's has crime and cold and is obsolete as a world city.
Chicago Obsolete???
All cities have crime..
Cold vs. earthquakes and brushfires etc..
Both have their pluses and minuses, but Chicago is highly desirable for many as many dislike the suburban nature of LA. No need to attack one of Americas great cities in that way.
LA looks lke a nice suburb...compared to chicago that is...just sayin'
Right. London's or Paris' skyline are even less impressive but what does it have to do with being a great city? Great cities are not dependent on scycrapers but rather on their standing in the world. LA is arguably the world center of filmmaking and its cultural impact on the planet can't be denied. Compared to Chicago LA is a cultural giant.
