IT is the best metro IMO.
It may be sprawl, but it's not tacky, boring, non-unique, sprawl like a lot of the rest of the county and its metros have.

I mean you can do all of the above in the NYC metro like gamble, swim in the ocean/lake, ski or hike a mountain, visit winery's, and experience some of the best food in the country. There is no cookie cutter same house for blocks sprawl, it offers so much in every corner of the metro. Hence the reason for it being so expensive to live here.

The Northeast is the best area period.

From Boston to DC, also you add cities like Hartford, Baltimore, Philadelphia with the Jersey shore and the seaside towns of New England and you have an area that no other region can match.
