I wouldn't exactly lump Montreal in with the US East Coast.

I pick Montreal in this case, if not simply for the advantage of having far, far less crime to deal with while still offering the same high level of amenities.

It still shares that same east coast feel to me even though it may not be an American city, not really cultural wise, but architecturally.

since we're talking architecture & skyline, i'd go with Philly. but, if we're talking culture: international flair, nightlife, cleaner etc.. i'd go with Montreal.

I would choose Philadelphia for all areas of city life and urban culture:

The picture of Philadelphia that was posted by the OP is very old, here is a updated pic:

You've clearly not spent time in Montreal then.

Philly is American east coast where Montreal, even though on the east coast, is distincly European -- although I'll admit Philly has as Euro-feel as any American big city; but can't touch Montreal in that sense... Both cities are historic, great architecture cities, diverse, transit/walking friendly, highly cultural and even international to a degree (although Philly pales compared to Montreal)... I vote Montreal, though, because Philly has a nasty/negative edge to it, which is manifested in nasty attitudes (in Philly 'addytoods") of the people -- where Montrealers are generally friendly; and Philly's terrible trash/rundown feeling in much of the town, even downtown (Center City).

Montreal gets my nod...

City - Montreal. Montreal is what Philadelphia would have been without the great middle class flight from the big cities of the east/midwest.

Region- Philadelphia. 2x the size, 5x the location.

Downtown-Evenly matched but give a slight nod to an oft overlooked Philadelphia .

Sorry but what are you referring to when you say "5x the location"?

Btw I like that 3rd picture.

Got that backwards. Montréal used to be the big city in Canada until most of the Anglophones and businesses moved to Toronto during the secession movements of the 1970's. I think it's cooled down since the last attempt was almost 15 years ago and not much more fuss has been made.
