I guess you are referring to the geography of the states which is obvious. But NYC folks dress country which is strange b/c they are OVERLY materialistic. What's up with all that gold and outdated 80s stuff that they wear? When is that going to go out of style for them?

Both areas have strong Southern roots. Arlington County, VA is the home of Robert E Lee and when you cross the Potomac, one of the main arteries in NoVa is called Jefferson Davis Highway--yes a road named after the leader of a breakaway government immediately across the river from our nation's capital. One would think that it was the locals way to flip-off the Feds after the Civil War.

Austin's Southern roots are exemplified by its Confederate Monument near the State Capitol. Also LBJ hails from the area immediately west of Austin and was known in the US Senate as a Southern Democrat. In fact, JFK chose him as VP on his ticket in the hopes that he would attract Southern votes (which he did).

I agree that the massive influx of transplants from elsewhere has served to dilute the Southerness of both respective areas. However one cannot deny that both areas are part of the South. One more caveat--the term Southwest is very ambiguous as it can refer to the Desert Southwest at times, and at other times it can refer to the region consisting of the western Southern states of Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, and far-southwestern Missouri. So in that regard, yes, Austin is Southwest versus states like Georgia, Alabama, and South Carolina being Southeast, but all of those states are nonetheless Southern (not including New Mexico and Arizona of course ).

Yeah also not including California. California is a southern state geographically. California, AZ and NM are all southern states geographically but since they aren't the cultural south nobody calls them the south.

Let's just be more frank and say the former Confederacy including Oklahoma then...

Austin is Austin. Not southern, NOR southwestern. Austin is in on a transition zone between the 2 regions. Just think SXSW Festival.

If you pull out a map and look at it, NOVA is just an extension of the whole Northeastern metro area. It's a logical progression of Northern culture spreading out of the Washington. So it makes sense that NOVA is not a Southern area even by just looking at the map. Austin isn't even close to the North. So why would it lose its "Southernness" just because a lot of Californians move there.

I guess I'm trying to say that for Austin to lose its Southernness is hard to do because its surrounded by the Confederate States and NOVA isn't.

Austin wasn't necessarily as Southern as the cities EAST of it, even BEFORE the Californians started moving there. It goes waaay beyond people from Cali living there. Look at it geographically, and look where all the other Southern cities are. Heck some Austinites I know don't consider themselves Southern. NoVa though it is right below DC, it is ALSO in a confederate state just like Austin. You drive just an hour South and you're right back in Dixie. As a matter of fact Richmond was the CAPITAL of the South. NoVa is still part of Va, and Austin is still part of TX. So YES NoVa has lost its' Southern character, but you can easily say the same for Austin. I don't see how NoVa is any different from Austin.

You're right. N. VA and Austin are both blue places and not so southern anymore. Yes Richmond was the headquarters of the Confederacy and 87% of Virginians identify themselves as southerners. That's a pretty overwhelming majority. N. VA still has southern qualities. It's a long way from NYC.
