As is Las Vegas too. New Orleans is the original "Sin City" of the USA. Las Vegas came later.

Venice: I almost want to say Philadelphia, though looks like something else has happen to that city

Paris: Washington D.C in a way, but I've heard the city is crime ridden.

Architecturally, Philly looks more of Paris than Venice.

kuato is on a distinguished road
I will try and avoid the snotty, "any comparison to Venice is laughable" angle, but come on - just because a city has an integral river with a "Fat Tuesdays" frozen drink bar, does that make it the "Venice" of America? Or if a city is inundated with decrepid, late 50's housing built on poorly planned canals sliced into swamp, does that make it Venice as well?

Savannah is probably the most superficially similar - a once great city built on maritime trade, with an abundance of good architecture recalling the slendor and wealth of the era. Nobody would confuse Savannah for Venice, but hey, it does have a waterway.

I would say that Ft. Lauderdale probably has the most canal-like similarities. There is something deliciously ironic about a "new" Florida city being compared to the great citadel of Byzantine and Renaissance Italy, but this is America, and people in Europe drink beer daily in pubs that are far, far older than anything in our country. Makes comparisons difficult.

Venice Florida, Venice Beach, Jacksonville, San Antonio and the Houston ship channel are completely INVALID for any comparison.

Yea, maybe 15-20 years ago. It's probably the most improved city in the country. In 1991 it did have 480 murders in one year. Right now it's on pace for 130 homicides for 2009. FAR from being crime ridden for how many people are in the city every day.

I think DC is easily the most like Paris considering it was designed by L'Enfant AFTER the city Paris itself.

-They both have no skyscrapers, but are still very dense with an interesting skyline anyway.
-Both have suburbs near by with skyscrapers that can be seen from the city. (Le Defense/Rosslyn or Bethesda)
-Both contain a monument that towers over part of the city. (Washington Monument/Eiffel Tower)
-Both have several traffic circles and squares throughout the city with the rest being set up in a grid.

Can't really find a city more similar to Paris than the one that was designed to be just like Paris by a French guy.
