Apples and oranges. No comparisons -- not even a resemblance.

I understand that according to the location listed, you are in Minnesota. Would you say that St. Paul has some similarities to Rome?

I agree. When you're out on the water in Venice, it definitely has a similar feel to south FL. However, if you've ever been to Venice in January, you know that's where the resemblance ends. I was surprised to learn that it lies on the same latitude as Montreal. Moreover, Ft Lauderdale doesn't have the Alps breathing down its' neck.

Or the town of St. Cloud Minnesota resembling the suburb or St. Cloud outside of Paris.

The coastlines and topography around SF and Athens are very similar. The way that the houses and buildings were nestled in the hillsides was similar.
Also the Plaka (main shopping district) in Athens felt very similar to Union Square.

I would say that Ft. Lauderdale probably has the most canal-like similarities. There is something deliciously ironic about a "new" Florida city being compared to the great citadel of Byzantine and Renaissance Italy, but this is America, and people in Europe drink beer daily in pubs that are far, far older than anything in our country. Makes comparisons difficult.

Venice Florida, Venice Beach, Jacksonville, San Antonio and the Houston ship channel are completely INVALID for any comparison.
Why would that make San Antonio invalid? Seems that you decribed it in your Savannah example myself.

From looking at pictures of Athens on Google Earth the vistas do look similar to San Francisco..white houses densely packed on hillsides. And both cities are at almost the exact same lattitude as well. Interesting.

I just looked this up Carrboro,NC is nicknamed "Paris of the Piedmont". The arts scene could be a factor.
