Why do we have threads on City Data that ask these types of questions? There are official crime statistics, you know. Opinions are useless when you have verified govt. stats.

LA is much safer than Chicago. It has significantly lower crime (both per capita and overall).

La wins this one. 360 murders this year alone in Chicago? That's terrible.

LA overall. Of course they're both huge cities covering hundreds of square miles. There are terrible places in LA as well as Chicago. There are also a majority of places in each city that are perfectly safe.

I believe one glaring thing you could say is that the worst off places in Chicago in the west and south sides are VERY hard up and dangerous.

Well, this is no contest. LA is much safer these days unless you are jaywalking.

Yeah this really shouldn't be a poll question. You can answer it with quantifiable facts from the FBI:

(2011 Rates per 100,000 people)
Murder
Chicago: 15.9
L.A.: 7.7

Robbery
Chicago: 517
L.A.: 263

Aggravated Assault
Chicago: 459
L.A.: 231

Property Crime
Chicago: 4,373
L.A.: 2,250

Burglary
Chicago: 977
L.A.: 450

Larceny/Theft
Chicago: 2,677
L.A.: 1,393

Motor Vehicle Theft
Chicago: 719
L.A.: 407

With all that said, however, I have NEVER felt unsafe in Chicago when I visit. I think, as was stated above, Chicago's "bad areas" seem much worse than L.A.'s "bad areas".

In addition, things change. If you did this comparison 20 years ago when L.A. had 5 times as many murders as today, these stats would have looked much different.

To my knowledge Glendale heights has a lot of apartments with working class folks. Is it sketchy? Well it depends; if you're coming from Naperville or some small town in the middle of nowhere then yea it probably is, but if youre coming from the West side it aint bad at all.

But its nowhere near as devestated as Gary not as bad as Harvey or Maywood. It's not even as bad as Waukegan or Parts of Joliet neither.
