My dad almost moved to Orlando for a job (back in 05 when the economy in FL was actually decent). I went house hunting with him and we were so unimpressed by the city that he decided to turn down the job and it only took a couple of weeks to find something that actually paid better back home in Houston. The cost of living adjustment alone is like a pay raise.
Anyway, I have visited a few of the largest cities in each state (though I have not been to Miami) and I must say that I like the 4 cities in the Texas triangle each more than any of the cities I have been to, so even if Miami is comparable to or even better than the best city in Texas, I would still have to give it to Texas, especially when you factor in architecture, museums, people, universities, etc. I'm sure Miami wins big on night life, though. Believe it or not, I actually prefer the natural beauty the Pine Woods on the north side of Houston and the Hill Country west of Austin to anything I've seen in Florida. I must say the beaches in Panama City are quite nice, though.
You guys prolly looked in all the wrong areas. knowing where most people from out of town who don't know many people in Orlando start looking for homes, you prolly looked in places like Kissimee, which is a very bland, ugly, and terrible place to live..
Thats what it all comes down to, the polls just basically show how many people are represented for each city/state. You know everyone is going to be bias and vote for where they live.
