People belittle Phoenix because of its perceived sprawl and how its developed.
People belittle the south for that PLUS all sorts of very insulting stereotypes that I wont repeat.
People do belittle Phoenix and it is interesting to find out just how many people truly have never been there. It is also interesting how many metro areas (including in the North) are just as sprawled as Phoenix. In addition, other cities like Tucson, Albuquerque, Palm Springs, etc are easily overshadowed by the insults posters fling at Phoenix.

EVERY metro area is sprawled. This isn't a new thing invented by the Sunbelt. Just look one of those maps that show the city lights from Space. From Boston all the way to D.C. it's just one gigantic blob of light. Oddly enough, the term The Sprawl was used by William Gibson in Neuromancer to explain this very area.
The South is easily the most underrated region on this site. While their cities aren't among my favorite, I do like Atlanta. The best thing about the South isn't their cities though. The people are great, the scenery is beautiful, and the weather (though it can get ridiculously hot) is awesome. Some of the best days of my life have been spent in South Carolina. Whether I was hanging out on Lake Hartwell, screaming my head off in Death Valley, or down in Charleston enjoying an oyster roast, I have had some amazing times in the South.
People here act as if when entering the South, you are required to change your name to Cletus or Dakwood, wear overalls with no shoes or socks, huff paint to lower your IQ, and have inappropriate intentions for your sister. Nothing could be further from the truth, except for the sister part (I keeeeed).
Though there are lots of ultra-religious people who I didn't like to associate with, there are many more people (whether they're religious or not) who are some of the nicest, friendliest people you'll ever meet. I miss the South
Fiddle-dee-dee, Scarlett, I Do Believe the South is Underrated!
I agree with the posters who say the most underrated area is the South.
The entire nation, including the media, sometimes portrays southerners as mindless, bible-pounding, coon-hunting moonshiners or eyelash-batting Scarlett O'Haras.
A bunch of different stereotypes come into play.
On the other hand, we northerners are called "Yankees" by southerners, and we northerners don't go around calling southerners "Rebels" (although some southerners may refer to themselves that way!).
Maybe it's a southern reaction to what is perceived as northern arrogance.
There's a lot to love about the South, and I don't think a lot of people who live outside of the region can look past their preconceived prejudices.
On this forum... the Southeast. People come on this forum just to bash it. Most complaints are lies, over exaggerations and stereotypes though. The only real downside that most people complain about is the heat.
I'm suprising no Californians have chimed in and commented that their state is the center of the universe, and anything less is not giving it proper accolade.
Hve to go midwest, but also New England is quite nice. However, the most underrated region nearby are the maritime provinces in Canada, which are quite stellar.
Easily the south so many idiots come here and spout nonsense. We don't drive down the street in our lifted truck, with our clan hood and guns hanging in the back speeding to get home to have a threesome with our sister and a pig. And about 90% of the people that say this are northeastern posters. Who complain about a sprawled faux cities.
