Yep, Philly being in the northeast corridor has lots of people around it; its MSA borders NYC to the north and DC-BAL to the south. Chicago borders Milwaukee.

A couple of us are still waiting for your Good points you love in living in Philly today? You never gave it a thought maybe? Maybe my post on Chicago-style housing was off-topic? Oh and downtown Chicago to downtown Milwaukee is 90 miles. Not the 150 miles Philly is supposed to best any city in population. It gets NYC and Baltimore and DC.

Heck, I live under 130 miles from Philly. Are all Philly posters angry? Its just a chat forum and opinions, facts and ideas. But if you like drama? That is suppose to be the Political forum. Here reasonable facts given are to be - respected. Why Chicago's Bungalow housing should NOT be called nonsense. The OP in this older thread said this -

That clearly includes housing too.

+1 lol. Although Steeps is still unbelievably incoherent, at least Steeps is not constantly yelling at people with caps anymore with his or her new profile.

That 100 and 150 mile radius isn't so effective though because there is a massive number of people within that population that have little to do with Philadelphia and its core.

Remember what the criteria was--within the cities how do you feel about look, lifestyle and amenities. You are not going to be habitually going to the different parts within the larger radii in almost any kind of lifestyle you have. Even a 25 mile radius is a lot. People simply do not live that way--if they have a far outlier in the distance they travel, they themselves are an outlier and the one or few places they do regularly travel to are pretty much set.

Again, this isn't saying bigger is better because I, on the whole, find the two equally appealing. It's just that when you stretch things to that extent, it's virtually meaningless.

For example, a person living in Center City but regularly going up to NYC is going to be almost certainly visiting Manhattan for the most part. That's not where all the people you're listing are. It's a great boon for some people in Philadelphia, but it's not the same as living in NYC and traveling among the boroughs regularly because that's simply not how people operate or have the funds and time to do so. I don't think we're actually trying to compare the lifestyle of someone living in Gary versus someone living in Center City, Philadelphia, so the point is mostly moot.

Now if it was a specific match-up between living in Gary versus Center City, then yea. I think in most cases, the latter is advisable.

It's also a little silly to argue that a city is better than another solely because it's closer to a third city

at 25 mile radius and 50 mile radius much of the area in Chicago is Water. Clearly the NE is more populous than the great lakes region near chicago (which is essentially what you are measuring at roughly 100 mile radius.

Why are we pretending 30+ million people live in Philadelphia?

The 50, 100, and 150 mile radius are irrelevant and didn't even needed to be included.

Thanks, rainrock. Impressive that Chicago packs over a million more people in half the square mileage -- isn't it?

Philadelphia has a eastcoast/northeast culture. While Chicago has more of midwest culture. Im more of a eastcoast guy. Philly wins here for me. And Philly has a better sounding accent.

Philly has a better location, within 2-3 hours of beaches, mountains (Appalachians), and several major cities (crowded Northeast corridor). Chicago is in the middle of no where, surrounded by cornfields, with Milwaukee being the only close major city. Philly wins.

Philly has larger cultural influence, raw numbers, and percentage of Black Americans, Puerto Ricans, Italians, & Irish than Chicago does. Philly also has sizable numbers of Dominicans, West Indians, & Jews, which are almost non existant in Chicago. Chicago has more Mexican & Polish/eastern european influence. I prefer Philly demographics than Chicago. Also Philly is not as segregated, theres almost a united Philly culture, while in Chicago the black neighborhoods and the white neighborhoods feel like 2 different worlds in seperate solar systems.

I prefer Philly rowhomes over Chicago bungalows/brownstones anyday.

Both cities have equally strong economies and high crime rates.

There, Philly is better
