So it's come down to a battle between these titans of the non-contiguous US!

Which city do you think is more isolated from the mainstream/mainland (please tell us your experience with both places)? Which one would you rather live in (all things considered)?

Gah, forgot to add a poll.

Lived in Hawaii, was going to go to Punahou school but moved to Wash DC. I absolutely love Hawaii.. So many cultures mixed, beautiful beaches, beautiful women, amazing weather, delicious foods, and it's just so serene that you can't help but be happy. The cost of living is brutal though. I definitely want to experience Alaska and all the nature it has to offer, but the months without sun aren't something I could handle.

Seeing as more people probably visit Honolulu I would say Anchorage.

I've never been to Honolulu, but my opinion of Anchorage is that it's the least desireable of the "big" cities in Alaska. Aerial views of the city make it look nice, or photos taken from the water, but on the ground, it's just another big, dirty city.

Juneau, on the other hand...

Honolulu is not connected to any land mass and it's in the middle of the Pacific. Geographically, it's isolated. At least Anchorage you can get to by car on the North American continent, provided you are willing to drive. Honolulu isn't connected to anything.

I would agree in saying that Anchorage is more isolated. It's in Alaska for freakin sake! I would prefer to live in Honolulu. I'm not a big fan of the cold.

Anchorage to Seattle by air is just over three hours, but it is atleast three days by auto. Honolulu to Los Angeles by air is five and a half hours, and I would seriously not attempt it by auto. Bottom line for me, Honolulu is more isolated. But, if you are going to be isolated, why not be isolated on a sunny beach with a tall beverage?

I'm going to say that I've always been fascinated by Alaska. Honolulu seems nice but you know I hate hot weather which doesn't work for a kid growing up in Georgia. So I've never had an interest living in a warm place.

Now I do live in a place that has brutal winters. Yes I consider DC to be brutal (compared to Georgia not Minnesota or similar) I can see why someone would appreciate the warm weather of Hawaii. But at the same time there's something about Alaska that really fascinates me. If I had to pick one I'd pick Anchorage. I like snow. I like the fact that nature is in your backyard they have moose and bears which sounds kinda dangerous but hardly boring. I love mountains. Yes I'm aware that Hawaii also has mountains. Maybe because it would be a challenge too. I kinda like that.
