A quick look in SSP's database shows there are about 160 such buildings, not quite 200 but certainly a lot more than 20. For comparison's sake, Toronto has around 80.
Sweet, thanks. That's what I thought. Toronto is newer, no doubt. Some of Philly's 120+ foot masonry buildings are world-class, namely City Hall, essentially tied for tallest freestanding stone masonry building in the world, and Wannamaker's (now Macy's) with it's atrium and the world's largest pipe organ. I need to post a pic on Philly's south Broad St. at night, they have lit up the old architecture in a very attractive manner with color-changing LEDs. It's the same stretch of Broad that is featured in "Trading Places". It's actually quite awesome, look for that tomorrow. Also anybody wanting to see how visually striking Philly can be should watch/re-watch 12 Monkeys. I'll also have some shots from Toronto posted by tomorrow. I shoot architecture for a living so I promise they'll be worth checking out.
This perspective looks right into the 'old' downtown, mostly granite masonry high-rises, with some brick. City hall in the center. Part of the 'new' downtown, glass and steel is off on the top right.

In Philadelphia, one often sees buildings of completely different styles & built in different eras juxtaposed over one another:

I had no idea how big Philly's skyline is. I've been to Toronto many times and it is easily one of my favorite cities and skylines. I like Philly's skyline, but it just isn't as impressive as Toronto's.
It was my first visit to Toronto but I could tell right away that it's a special city. I would actually make this contention - that Philly's skyline is competitive during daytime, but Toronto is far superior at night. You really need bright daylight to appreciate the colors and textures of Philly's buildings, especially some of the older art deco and brick structures. For Toronto, the CN tower actually looks kind a bit tacky by day, but at night it has amazing presence, with it's dramatic lighting and dizzying height.
Before I moved to Philly, I severely underrated it. Now I laugh at that state of affairs, but it remains true... Philly is underrated, especially the skyline. I do not think Toronto is overrated though.

Just visited Toronto, I live in Philly. Found this thread because it is highly ranked on Google. Toronto blew me away, for a day. Driving in at night the scope of the skyline is impressive, and indeed it being Canada for most of the year you see the city in the dark so that is fitting. Compared to Philly it is cleaner, it is bigger, it is 'nicer' and it is newer.
Huh? The city is dark because it's in Canada? What are you talking about?
The way Toronto is built, it's influenced by fact that winter brings extremely short days, long nights, cold weather. Sorry if it makes no sense. I should have said part of the year, not most of the year. Obviously in summertime the opposite is true. long days, beautiful weather.

No, it's not. I live in downtown Toronto (The Annex). Trust me, someone is lying to you.
