Rap, as in "the art of speaking over someone else's recorded music in a live setting", was invented in Jamaica in the 50's and brought to the Bronx by DJ Kool Herc in 1973.

rap was actually a developed concept. Hip hop and rap was a concept that was exapanded on through out the seventies. You wont be able to show me any example of hip hop or rap in jamaica or anywhere else. Cold crush brothers were the most significant rappers to develop the concept in the beginning.

Really melle mel from the furious five was the first true rapper with the song "The Message". Hes from the bronx not jamaica

And also rap is not the art of speaking over music. Rap is a mainly 16 bar concept thats more poetic than jamaican toasting. Two completely different things

Yes, it's a joke...it's just funny to me how "hip hop" is such a heated topic on here, as if it's something so incredibly important. It's not. It's no more important than rock, or disco, or pop, or whatever other pop culture stuff. It's just not that big a deal. People who get all worked up over it are the clowns. Who the hell cares other than a few ghetto folks from NY and L.A. and a bunch of Southerners? Nobody else cares.

If you're going to boast about NY's prominence in Music, there's much more to be proud of and boast of - Julliard, Lincoln Center, and the Metropolitan Opera House, for example. That's REAL cultural significance, not pop culture marketing significance. It's like England bragging about Harry Potter, a stupid pop culture marketing success, coming from England instead of bragging about their REAL cultural contributions from Shakespeare, Byron, Chaucer, etc.
