I definitely want to experience Alaska and all the nature it has to offer, but the months without sun aren't something I could handle.
Very few places in Alaska actually do without any sun during the winter.

Hawaii is obviously more isolated...as stated many times before on this forum it IS "a part of the continental North American continent".

Anchorage: it truly would be magnificent! I love the cold and the mountains, but idk about -15 degrees cold. ;/ I still think it would be fascinating wonderland of a place.

Honolulu: not as fascinating and too humid. The catch? You'd probably be in and out of the water so it wouldn't be so bad. I really love the beach scene with a pina calada with two shots of brandi in my hand! I could go for that as well, I suppose.

However, I think Honolulu would get old, where as Anchorage really is the kind of place where my heart is.

I should clarify that I don't mean just physical isolation (which is a big factor, but not the only one), but also cultural isolation from the US and the rest of the world. I imagine that Honolulu probably gets a larger number of tourists and emigrants/immigrants/returning people as well as servicemen than Anchorage does.

Alaska is also a very tourism-driven State.

Physically Honolulu is more isolated because at least in Anchorage you can drive to the lower 48, even if they built a bridge or tunnel to Hawaii I still wouldn't drive to and from there.

In reality Anchorage is probably more isolated because Honolulu probably has more in common with other U.S. cities and more people move and vacation to Honolulu than Anchorage.

I would rather live in Honolulu though.

Yes, that's true--but more so than Hawaii?

Average monthly climate and weather indicators.
Anchorage
Avg. Temp- 35.9
Days with Min Temp Below Freezing- 191
Days with Max Temp of 90 F or Higher- 14
Cloudy Days- 239
Clear Days- 61
Partly Cloudy Days- 65
Percent of Possible Sunshine- 41%

Honolulu
Avg. Temp- 77.2
Days with Min Temp Below Freezing- 0
Days with Max Temp of 90 F or Higher- 37
Cloudy Days- 94
Clear Days- 90
Partly Cloudy Days- 181
Percent of Possible Sunshine- 71%

I would rather live in Hawaii. I like cold weather and winter, but not 9 plus months of winter. I also don't like the idea of my summers being the equivalent of mid fall in Chicago in terms of temperature. It is also too gloomy for me in Alaska.

Anchorage - Nearest city with pop. 1,000,000+: Los Angeles (2332.2 miles)

Honolulu - Nearest city with pop. 1,000,000+: Los Angeles (2553.8 miles)

However this is just distance to the mainland. Kahului appears to be closer to Honolulu than any town of 20,000+ is to Anchorage. Possibly the same can even be said of Hilo. So I'll go Anchorage.

I can't believe that Anchorage has 14 days above 90°, I wasn't expecting that for an Alaskan city.
