It doesn't. That statistic is incorrect. I've seen it printed, but it is not right. According to weather.com, the all-time record high in Anchorage is just 86. However, there are places in the AK interior where there are many 90 degree plus days.

Well, no, this is not true. It can get into the 90's in the interior. The unexpected part is that you have to go north of Anchorage to find the warmest (sometimes hot) summer weather. During the summer n Alaska, getting inland away from the cooling effects of the ocean has a greater effect than moving north.
