I would say Atlanta #1, Houston #2. For such a large metro area, Dallas has a ridiculously poor quality and quantity of institutions of higher learning.
WoW!!Really interesting info.I new some of this, but it just confirmed what I thought I always knew. That Atlanta has a tremendous amount of college students and educated people.I wish I could have used this on the Philly vs Atlanta thread before it was closed!!

Having the nationally ranked #66 university SMU and one of nation's the top public medical schools UT-Southwestern, isn't quite ridiculously poor quality. As far as quantity; Dallas offers UT-Dallas, U of Dallas, UNT-Dallas, Dallas Baptist U, and UNT Law Center-Downtown Dallas (approved and under development).
The metro area contains two of Texas' largest universities UNT-Denton and UT-Arlington, Fort Worth has TCU and Texas Weslyan U.
The DFW area doesn't necessarily need an additional quantity of colleges and universities but the quality must improve.
I'm going with Atlanta b/c of Emory and GA tech. I don't know which city is next, but I do know that Houston has a great medical school.
Actually Rice and Emory rank on the same level according to US World News. Houston also has HBU, UH, TSU, Baylor (One of the top medical schools in the country), PV, Sam Houston, etc
Atlanta crushes Houston and Dallas when it comes to public schools, but when it comes to private schools. They can go either way.

I'm curious, what are some of the well know or ranked private schools in Houston.I honestly do not know.
Atlanta has these that I can think off the top of my head:
Morehouse
Spelman
Clark-Atlanta Univ.
Agnes-Scott
Oglethorpe University
S.C.A.D.
Columbia Theological Seminary
Interdenominational Theological Center
Mercer University-Atlanta
American Intercontinental University
Those are just the one in the city, not the burbs
there are about 10 more in the various metro counties. Not to mention that these are not public.

Not as many as those, but we have Rice, HBU, and St. Thomas.
I'll admit, I was wrong about private universities too. I wasn't aware Atlanta had so many.

Atlantagets second, and why the H*ll is Dallas on this list? No comparison what so ever.
Atlanta has Emory which ranks right along with Rice. Both rank number 17 in the country.
