VB is cool. I just spent the past few days there enjoying the waves hurricane Bill was kicking up

9 times out of 10 high crime cities in America have high rates of poverty.
The two conditions are linked.

Violent crime and the poverty rate aren't always that connected though...San Francisco is a notable exception. Compare SF's poverty rate with the 10 cities closest to it in violent crime rate for 2007.

city/violent crime rate/murder rate/poverty rate:

Dallas - 1069 - 16/100k - 21.7%
Tampa - 1060 - 8/100k - 20.1%
Jacksonville - 1022 - 15/100k - 12.2%
Albuquerque - 990 - 9/100k - 13.5%
Wichita - 945 - 11/100k - 11.2%
San Francisco - 874 - 14/100k - 11.8%
St. Paul - 857 - 5/100k - 15.6%
Newark - 853 - 37/100k - 28.4%
Columbus - 852 - 11/100k - 14.8%
Oklahoma City - 851 - 11/100k - 16%
Anchorage - 846 - 8/100k - 7.3%

SF has the 6th highest violent crime rate of the bunch, and the 4th highest murder rate (as well as the 3rd highest robbery rate, after Newark and Dallas), yet at the same time it has the 3rd lowest poverty rate of all of them.

(i left out Las Vegas Metro and Charlotte-Mecklenburg, because their crime stats cover more than one city, but they would have taken the place of Dallas and Tampa on the list)

The US poverty rate is around 12%, Fisco is pretty average with regards to poverty. Friscos murder rate is pretty low.

But in regards to it's crime rate, you'd think SF would have a somewhat higher poverty rate (as you can see from the list). That's what I'm getting at...Anchorage looks like an even better example than SF. As far as SF's murder rate, it's not that high, but it's not that low either. In 2007 of all cities of 250,000 residents or more, 20 had higher murder rates than SF, and 50 had lower murder rates than SF (Phoenix, Indianapolis, and Tulsa were tied with SF at murder rates of 14/100k).

Not necessarily. Supposedly around 31% of people in Syracuse live under the poverty level, but we hardly go over 20 murders here, as it's only happened twice(2002 and 2008). Our crime rate, relatively speaking, isn't that high above the national average.

I will say, it is a city that still has some very nice neighborhoods and if you don't live a certain lifestyle, you are pretty much fine.

Here's a list of places over 50,000: http://www.city-data.com/top2/c407.html

Most are suburbs and Clay is a suburban town outside of Syracuse.

You can check out the crime rate of these cites here: http://www.city-data.com/top2/c544.html
