I think both cities boast very high quality schools, but which one gets the edge?
Carnegie Mellon is probably more renowned than any Seattle school, but UW is one of the top public schools in the country and because it's so much bigger its overall output of influence might be larger. Plus the surrounding area also has Seattle University, Seattle Pacific University, Pacific Lutheran, and University of Puget Sound. Those latter schools are fairly well known on the west coast, but might not be back east.
Pittsburgh has better universities. But I think Seattle has (or recently had) the highest population percentage of college graduates of any U.S. city.
Seattle is not a place where prospective college students come to attain an education. It's much more a place where young 20 something year olds move after they finish college. It does have the highest percentage of bachelor degree holders in the country. In Pittsburgh, you have better access to private higher education.

I agree. That's unfortunate for Pittsburgh. I think that cities where 20-somethings go to live after college are more desirable than cities where they actually attend college, only to leave when they graduate.
Pittsburgh has a variety of excellent universities. But when one visits Pittsburgh you get the impression that the graduates must flee like wet cats upon graduation because the rank and file resident do not seem very educated.
U-Dub is a huge and great (and often overlooked) university, but I'd say Pitt and CMU combined have greater clout and make greater contributions in more fields than U-Dub does.
