Both cities are in the Northeast; both cities have a strong economy and a large number of professional jobs. That's where the similarities end. Personally, I think Boston and SF are much more alike (in terms of size/economy/etc.).
NYC/London would be a much better comparison (they are a similar type/category of city, i.e. major global metropolises). NYC is much larger than Boston, SF, DC, Philly, etc. Comparing Boston to NYC is like comparing an orange to a vacuum cleaner.
I disagree. Boston has a true New England vibe. NYC feels more like Philly. NYC is also a grid iron street layout; Boston is a random mess of streets. NYC is also comprised of five boroughs, with three of them separated by water. Boston is one stand alone city area. And Boston has about 1/16 the population of NYC. NYC also has a much more comprehensive public transit system.
I prefer Boston. I mean, come on. It's cleaner and cooler looking, and the history and architecture is superior.
True all though the Bronx and Staten Island are a mess of streets also, especially staten.
Hum..yeah, I kind of see what the original poster was going for. Boston has elements of NYC, but nowhere near the scale.
NYC and Boston are like in the way London and Manchester are alike. Similarities in architecture and character, but vast differences in scale.
Culturally, There similarities: liberal, dense, old Northeastern, distinct accents, expensive, east coast elites, majority minority cities with mix of whites, blacks, asians, hispanics (although boston is whiter and less immigrant). Old school sports teams, high local opinions of the city "greatest city in the word/hub of the universe".
From a built environment standpoint, there are similarities: urban harbor, bridges/tunnels, old school subway system,North end, Becon Hill: similar to below 14th in Manhattan, FiDi/-mini-Fi/Di. Back Bay/South End = Browntone Brooklyn.
The big essential difference is the scale. Boston is missing Midtown or High Rise residential areas like UES/UWS. The city never feels like you are in a major world city. Given that this is so core to NYC's identity. I can see why people would say they are not alike.
When it comes to looks I think Boston looks a lot more like NYC then philly. When out comes to people I think philly is more similar. Only because when I go to philly sometimes I feel like I never left NYC.
