Jackson, MS vs. Richmond, VA vs. Birmingham, AL
What do you guys think? Pros and cons of each? This one's just out of pure curiosity.

I don't know much about Jackson or Birmingham. Richmond is very nice. The city isn't all that great, but I like it's surrounding suburbs. downtown isn't as vibrant as I'd like.

Richmond is the only city I would consider from your list mostly based on location.

I haven't been to Richmond, but i would have to say Birmingham out of the other two cities even though I am a resident of the Jackson metro area.

The Birmingham metro is the nicest. The city of Richmond is the nicest.
Taking into account the suburbs, it's no contest, in my opinion: Birmingham by a mile.

Out of these three, Richmond definitely has the most going for it. It has the strongest local economy (most F500 companies), the most historic, cohesive built environment, and the best location both geographically (on a river, close to the nation's capital) and politically (in the most progressive state of the bunch). More recently, Richmond also has the best leadership. Birmingham's mayor is in trouble and Jackson's past mayor was having some legal issues as well before he died. Jackson is a notch below both Richmond and Birmingham and is the "odd man out" here, competing with cities (metro areas) twice its size.

Jackson, MS has THE worst downtown (dead, dead and DEAD) area for a city it's size in all of these United States of America. Richmond and Birmingham is like NYC compared to it.

This statement could be true several years ago, but there is actually quite a bit going on downtown now. While businesses in the burbs are closing, new businesses and night spots are opening up downtown. Also, there has been a huge increase in downtown residents over the past few years.
I've never been to Richmond so I have no real opinion on it, but I have heard good things. Birmingham seems to be on the downhill from all the negative media attention they have been receiving in recent months, so I would be cautious even though I have friends who live there. I know for a fact that Jackson is on the upswing, with over $250 million of recent built downtown development and over $350 million currently under construction.
