Does the census burea disallow two different CSAs to overlap? If so, then it's a bad indicator for cities tightly packed in with other metros (such as Philly) since it wouldn't be particularly accurate.
Its not only a bad indicator, in Mercer Countys case its blatant fraudulence. Trenton grew around and with Philadelphia, it should be an integral part of Philadelphias MSA but its not even in its cmsa. These are 2 cities connected by a population density of about 8,000 people per sq mi. via Lower Bucks County(15 miles ). Trenton to Manhattan is about 65 miles and the historical relationship is non existent.
Trenton was always part of Philadlephia metro until the year 2000 when Mercer County switched allegiances to NYC. Nothing to do with commuting patterns -as every person in NJ would attest to- they switched because the state and federal employees automatically received a higher cost of living allowance. A sham in the context of census boundary designation
Dang, why is Philadelphia so mad about being small?
Mad? No. More like incredulousness, seeing how we are being told how our metro works by a throng of robotic seemingly zombie-like "left toasters".
If Trenton/Mercer county's existence was due to NYC or NYC metro area I'd be the first to salute NYC.But thats simply not the case. Trentons growth didnt trickle down from NYC rather it creeped upward from Philadlephia during the 19th + 20th centuries.

Actually, the Office of Management and Budget, part of the Executive Branch of the Federal Government, they tell ALL OF US, how our metros work.

See, that doesnt really matter. Apparently more of their people commute to the NY Metro than the Philadelphia Metro. Maybe not all the way to NYC but certainly to NJ counties that are part of the Greater NYC Area.
So while you talk about existence and whatnot, lots and lots of money leaves NY and goes to Trenton. From that perspective it makes sense that Trenton would be part of NY.

It is very difficult to have a civil conversation...because there seems to be an agenda going on???? I too keep trying...but then the insults usually start flying my way.
