I also think that some cities that have a downtown built on a higher elevation than other areas in their metros makes the skyline seem taller even if they have some tall buildings - Pittsburgh, Austin, etc. The same can be said for some cities that have skylines which compete with surrounding hills, mountains - their skylines can appear smaller in contrast.
well actually Austin's downtown is built at a lower elevation than most of the austin area so the skyline looks tiny unless your right up next to it or on a hill.
I do not remember Phoenix EVER getting too much hype about its skyline. In fact, many posters criticize the skyline or complain that it's too small. While I agree that it needs much help for its size, it doesn't have the worst skyline, especially when you factor in the buildings north of downtown on Central that are often left out of photos of the Phoenix skyline.
Chill out dude. Look at the title of the thread. It's 'Deceiving Skylines'. It's not a 'better or worse' skyline thread. It's not a 'underrated skyline' thread. It's a thread based a lot on individual perception of a skyline. And the skyline that Phoenix has is deceiving. You can look at it and it's DECEIVING because it doesn't seem like it would be for a city of OVER 1,000,000 people.

WTF dude...I'm not sure...are you and West 336 the same person? or do you just like hearing yourself talk (?), because you responded to a post that really had nothing to do with you (twice now). I WAS responding initially to someone else's post and you still feel the need to chime in again, and again, and again. If you believe that Phoenix's skyline really sucks, then by all means, go scream it out of your car window or go whisper it to your best friend's ear, but I'm done talking with you.
