I grew up in NYC and now live in San Francisco, so I have experienced both parks quite a bit. Both are quite beautiful and have lots to recommend them. Central Park is certainly the more famous of the two, but that's hardly a reason to disregard Golden Gate Park, which has a lot of history. That said, Central Park gets the edge for being more of a pedestrian park, which I prefer. A lot of Golden Gate Park acts as a big parking lot, with lots of cars parked on the side of the road. Also while Golden Gate Park is the nicer park to live next to, Central Park abuts more interesting neighborhoods by far.

Good point about Central Park being more...well, central to NYC than GG Park is to San Francisco. GG Park is more on the edge of the city although it does border some pretty vibrant, urban areas (especially Haight/Ashbury)

Explain this. How do you figure, and where did you get this from? GGP was created less than 15 years after Central Park was and they look nothing alike. Central Park was designed as an escape from the City; GGP was designed to expand development of the City around that part of town.

Good assessment. This is an opinion I can listen to. The East Coast boosters on this site know no bounds, and anyone claiming the two parks aren't in the same league (which they obviously are, as evidenced by GGP even being mentioned on CP's Wikipedia page lol) is not even worth listening to. Their opinion is moot b/c they are obviously not making a rational comparison. Thank you for making a fair comparison here.

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Keep quiet if you have to resort to embellishment to prove your point.

The 1017-acre site, at the time mostly sand dunes and rocks, was acquired and William Hammond Hall and his Scottish assistant, John McLaren, were appointed to oversee the project.

The pair based their design on New York's Central Park and scoured the world for interesting trees and plant life. McLaren succeeded Hall as director of the park and continued to live and work within Golden Gate Park (at McLaren Cottage) until his death at age 90 in 1943.

1. Central Park is more manicured, looks better and boasts more activities that Golden Gate Park.
2. Central Park is more coveted.
3. Central Park is surrounded by much nicer neighborhoods.
4. Central Park is Central Park.
5. Central Park attracts more visitors.

Visiting Central Park is not running away from the beloved city since the last time I checked, Central Park is part of Manhattan which is part of New York City. They obviously mean "relax". Just as people go to the beach to "escape". It's not that difficult to comprehend.

You do realize that Prospect Park is generally considered Olmstead's finest work? He frequently cited it as his favorite.

The Japanese Garden at GGP is more manicured than anything at Central Park. Sorry.

Well, I should hope so since its too muggy or too freezing for sports.

I covet being next to the ocean more than anything Central Park or its surroundings could ever offer me.

NYs best. Since its not as naturally beautiful as SF,it makes sense that NYCs richest should seek to find somewhere nearest to some semblance of nature. Our rich need only walk outside.

Oh thanks, now we know what its called.

Imagine that--the largest park in the largest city in the nation attracts more visitors. What a shock

Your sure told us. hahaha
