Two things I want to point out. The NM is well integrated into DC's landscape. The two mile park is anchored by the Lincoln Memorial and the Capitol with the Monument centered in the middle. On any given day, THE NM hosts protesters, festivals, kickball players, softball games and just people mingling. Also some of the grandest museums in the world are on the Mall. It is more diverse than CP.

The Smithsonian is a major plus for me. I love that place.

By name, maybe? Are you serious? Many Americans have never even heard of National Mall. Also, I have NEVER seen National Mall in any movies or talked about in the media. So, National Mall is not as popular as Central Park. Visually, Central Park blows away National Mall in that category too. I hate to break this to you, but the majority (7 out of 10) agree with me.

^^^^^Did you just wake up from a hundred year old sleep? Everytime a news show, movie or anything related to DC is on TV, they show a picture of the NM? Who has never heard of the NM?? The Monument, the Capitol and the Lincoln Memorial are three of the most recognized structures in the world. Where are they located?

Central Park more integrated. Its right next to the largest CBD in the world and other world class neighborhood as well as close to major transportation.
Central Park has those things and more.

BigCity,

The NM has a subways station 50 feet below it also? Three other subway stations are two blocks away. It anchors the southern most part of DT DC (The third largest CBD is the US). It has 25 million visitors yearly. 17 national landmarks sit on the Mall. Almost 2 million people were on the Mall for Obama's inauguration.

No, I am well aware of National Mall and think it's a great park. I am just saying that many other Americans have never heard of it. When this thread was started I was talking with two friends on aim, one from Long Island and the other from Miami. Their response when asked the question about the two parks is that they had never heard of National Mall.

That cant compare to this.

Central Park has 25 million visitors as well. Central Park is a National Landmark and has numerous amounts of landmarks in and around it and 2.5 million people come to each summerstage concert.

I am from Brooklyn and those subway stations border CP. The Smithsonian Station is in the middle of the NM. Here is a list of museums and monuments and iconic structures on the NM. CP doesn't come close!

1. Washington Monument
2. National Museum of American History
3. National Museum of Natural History
4. National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden
5. West Building of the National Gallery of Art
6. East Building of the National Gallery of Art

7. United States Capitol
8. Ulysses S. Grant Memorial
9. United States Botanic Garden
10. National Museum of the American Indian
11. National Air and Space Museum
12. Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden

13. Arts and Industries Building
14. Smithsonian Institution Building
15. Freer Gallery of Art
16. Arthur M. Sackler Gallery
17. National Museum of African Art

This USGS satellite image of the National Mall (proper) was taken April 26, 2002. The Capitol and surrounding grounds on the right were pixelated before release, presumably for security reasons.
