I strongly disagree that members of City-Data could come up with a better list. I find this forum ridiculously provincial and ripe with misinformation. A good quarter of the people on here are trolls who are anti-somecity. Then you have all the people who haven't traveled much who only brag about their own city. They think that because they live in a city many think is cool, that somehow makes them cool. These people are not willing to be objective about things because if they admit there's something wrong with their city, they think that it automatically reflects badly on them as a person.

And take a look at the people who are chastising this list the most.............where are they from? That is not to say that this list is perfect, which it can never be, as it is strongly subjective. But just notice who complains the most.
Yes, you basically summed up the majority of City-Data in a nutshell...

Beirut is an amazing city too...but would hardly rank it as worlds best. There are others that are rather funny to me ... but it might hit home too much for all the homers out there. Istanbul, I think I make a pretty good assumption that most of you have never been.

Sounds like you are very bitter than San Fran was not even in the top 10

Talk about homerism, pot meet kettle

I agree the list is pretty good in terms of which cities are mentioned but what I have a problem with is the actual ranking/scoring system which has the same BS categories that I always see mentioned.

For example why is World Status a category and why is given equal scoring with the other categories? For 99% of people in the real world a city's "world status" is meaningless in terms of one's ability to enjoy a city....especially when that is pretty much what most of the other categories are taking into account. If a city had a perfect 10 in every single category except "World Status" it could STILL be beaten by New York according to their ranking system which is simply ridiculous. IMO such a category is just to add fluff points.

Secondly how in the heck are they determining quality of life? I'm laughing out loud at Tokyo receiving a 4 in that category. It's vastly safer than New York, has a better transport system, and it is much much cheaper to actually live in the heart of the city. I've lived a significant amount of time in both cities on roughly the same level of income and my quality of life in Tokyo was significantly greater than that of New York's. Now if you're comparing the two cities based on being mega rich then maybe New York would have Tokyo beat, or if you're comparing living way out in the suburbs, but for an middle income person wanting to really experience big city life Tokyo > New York. A BRAND NEW apartment in the center of Tokyo, within 6-7 minutes walking distance from Shinjuku or Shibuya (two of the most happening places in Tokyo), can be had for around $1200 per month. Now see how far $1,200 will get you near the most happening places on the island.....

As for world status, this isn't exactly Constantinople when the other rival was set on fire by the Visigoths...
Very good catch Grapico. I was starting to agree about what Deezus said than you made me realize that they are measuring "Quality of Life" and World Status" which has nothing to do with travel. Not to mention, they claim its their Greatest City Ranking.

Also rate up for the Constantinople line! I wonder how many people know what other city was set on fire by the Visgoths?

Now that I think of it, that also seems to be the case for a lot of retirees from NYC- can't get out of NYC quick enough. There's a retired couple just like that in my neighborhood.

My family has always retired in Manhattan. You'd be surprised how many people love to be in Manhattan when they're retired. They're not anxiously waiting to get out of like you think.

Just like any other link (including the ones you say were not credible because NY was not #1) it is just an opinion piece and not scientific

But it's yet another article that says we're #1, that's more credible than most

It is not more credible than most. It is only credible to you because it says what you want to hear

If London Paris and Tokyo had been above NY you would be crying and banging your head on the keyboard screaming "its not fair, this article is biased and not credible"

I don't know how many of you people have been to Europe. When you tell a European that you are American, they automatically ask "NYC or Hollywood?". It is true. Texas is COWBOYS to them. Most wouldn't know Houston from Flagstaff. Florida is MICKEY MOUSE and Miami is the same as Orlando to them.
