Miami is not a tier 1 city. That title belongs to NYC and to a lesser extent LA and maybe Chicago. IMO, Miami is a bottom tier 2 or a higher tier 3 city and Charlotte is a tier 5 city.

I think that person might have been speaking regionally. In the South, Miami is a tier 1 city (along with Atlanta, Houston, and Dallas) and Charlotte tier 2 (along with Nashville, Tampa, Orlando, Austin, etc.).

We've had the discussion before. Just because a city is located in an area with a bunch of Mayberry's, it doesn't become a tier one city. I agree with blackout.

.

I agree with you about NYC being in a class by itself in the USA. The rest I accept as your opinion and everyone has one.

It's not that difficult to rank cities/metros into tiers. There is plenty of legitimate criteria out there for one to use (i.e. metro size, GMP, major universities, media, number of Fortune 500 companies, etc...).

There really isn't much of a better word than "swinging". Of course combined with "venues" does make for some tawdry connotations...

Still, as I said, Miami vs Charlotte is a bad comaprison.

I don't know how long ago this was, but that does NOT describe a typical Saturday night Uptown at all (unless you were in the government district or something). If it were during a holiday weekend I could possibly see it, but on a normal Saturday night, Uptown is jumping.

I agree! If you go along Tryon, Trade and College Streets on a Saturday night, it is always crowded. I go there often and uptown is always jumping on a Friday or Saturday night. Now maybe on a Saturday afternoon, there's not much going on, mainly to the lack of real retail, even then I still see a good amount of foot traffic on Saturdays, but it is a totally different story at night.
