So what do you use as a gauge of how well Houston is marketing itself? Population growth? Economic growth?
Hmm...say no more.

That's why most Houstonians consider Houston very bad at selling itself.

On the other hand, I think Austin needs to win a PR award. It seems like the city just came out of no where and is now arguably the most popular city in Texas.
I think it also became popular after all of the people who used to live there spoke highly of it. Now, the things that made Austin so great (especially in the early 90's) aren't there anymore (including the people).

Well economically no, but as for tourism, nightlife, and over all entertainment, yes. Yes it does. I'm not sure why people are arguing with me. There are about four other Houstonians who have said the same thing on this thread. We here many of the negative and false stereotypes that attached to Houston and we also know that there several very attractive aspects of the city that most people (especially outside of Texas and the South) don't know about.

True. Which is even more why Austin is probably the best city in the country at selling itself. I can't think of one negative stereotype that is attached to Austin on a national scale (except for maybe that it's still a college town). Of course, we both know that Austin has its fair share of problems. The world outside of Texas just doesn't seem to know about them. That's why I think Austin would probably be one of the best cities in the country at selling itself.

I'd agree that Houston could sell itself much better than it does. There are great museums, some pretty awesome neighborhoods and one of the better restaurant scenes in the nation. But the city isn't considered "sexy" enough to warrant tourists to come on down.

Yeah, I guess Houston lacks that glamour when the media portrays it. It has it, but you don't see a CSI Houston or a big screen movie showing you the ritziest sides of the town. I think that goes for a lot of Texas cities. They have so much to offer and diversity, but people just don't think about that with them. Actually there are a lot of cities in other parts of the US like this too. Everyone is just focused on a couple of places.
