Been driving up and down the East Coast for the past 10 years for my job and Im really, really surprised the NY is at the bottom. There are about 10 states that I can think of off the top of my head with much worse drivers. DC area - Im looking at you!
All this Marylanders cant drive MUST be talking about 695 and the Balitmore area...when coming from Balitmore I feel like im speeding..when hitting 495 in PG I feel like I have to speed up
-Wisconsin: Near Milwaukee, people travel pretty quickly, but the farther north you go, the slower it gets. Up in Northwestern Wisconsin it is brutal. People drive a good 5mph under the speed limit.
-Minnesota: I've heard they get fast in the Twin Cities, but we stayed along the southern border of MN, and the drivers were just as slow (if not slower) as the Wisconsin drivers.
-South Dakota: Worst of the trip. These people are ridiculously slow. I'm talking traffic moving at 10-15 under the speed limit. Good thing there were few enough cars on the roads that I was able to pass everybody at 5 over the speed limit (80 in most areas).
-Montana: Montanans move very quickly. After a long drive passing everyone on the roads, it was a shock when the Montana drivers were flying past us.
-Wyoming: Middle of the pack, a little slow. Didn't experience too many WY drivers as the roads are so empty there.
-Nebraska: Kind of like Minnesota. Slow but not even close to as bad as South Dakota. Most people go 5 under in 75mph zones.
-Iowa: A relief from the Nebraska speeds. Far from speed demons, but Iowans at least go the speed limit, which was an improvement from most of the drivers on the trip (other than MT).
-Illinois: Getting back into the Chicago area was a bit of a shock. In many of the other states we traveled to there were 75mph speed limits with people going 55mph. In Chicagoland, you've got people going 75 with 55mph speed limits.
Interesting reading everyone's different observations. It must be the metro areas that bring down NY. I really find the drivers here quite subdued and reasonable. The troopers are quite vigilant upstate especially around the many construction areas. Most traffic is 65-low 70s. You go over 75 and you're asking for trouble.
I find PA drivers decent enough, albeit slightly inept in the snow.
MA/NJ -Yeah lol, they are pretty bad. The State troopers here love them, though.
New Mexico - they didn't seem to like signaling there. But they didn't drive as fast as I would have expected considering the wide open roads and the 75 mph limit. I thought for sure I'd see people flying by at 100+, but nope.
I've found the drivers up in NH Maine, Vermont, to be slow cautious drivers. And this is coming from a cruise set at 65-70 driver. I felt like Mario Andretti up there. It was actually rather scary I was thinking "What is this a moose breeding zone or something? Do they know something I don't?" I swear I was only overtaken 4 times during my week up there.
People in South Dakota drive really slow because there really isn't a reason to go fast. The speed limit on the interstate is already 75 and drops down to, at the lowest, 65 around the "big" cities. I thought the drivers in the Twin Cities were insanely fast when I first came here.
People in Ohio drive so slow. It makes sense though considering that they have the strictest highway patrol I have ever seen. I swear there is always a cop every 20 miles (at least) no matter where you travel. I feel like Illinois has the best drivers in the Great Lakes region, well Chicago, not Illinois. They are always driving at least 10 over, which is great in my book. Kentucky has the worst drivers I have seen. They don't signal, they drive the speed limit in the fast lane, and they always act lost. I think drivers in Indiana, Michigan, and Wisconsin are pretty much the same. They all drive about 5-10 over and tend to be polite.
