And murderers in NYC actually get prosecuted.

btw sf is not even in the same league to manhattan, much less nyc... chicago is not even in the same league as nyc, and it is literally 4x bigger than SF...
Which NYC are we talking about? Post-guiliani or pre-guiliani?

I actually perfer the NYC that was less hostile towards the poor/working class. I know crime was worse, but the place had sooo much heart and soul.

Now when I go to Manhattan it feels like an big urban amusment park for suburban tourists.

NYC's stats might be better now than back in the day, but there are intangibles to a city that you just can't quantify.

Not to mention SF tends to have twice as many murders as it did in 2009...2009 saw the lowest murder rate in SF since 1963 (and SF's rate was still higher than NYC's and Manhattan's in 2009).

Manhattan murders:
2003 - 96 (6.1/100k)
2004 - 81 (5.1/100k)
2005 - 88 (5.5/100k)
2006 - 102 (6.3/100k)
2007 - 69 (4.2/100k)
2008 - 62 (3.8/100k)
2009 - 55 (3.4/100k)
total - 553 murders

San Francisco murders:
2003 - 73 (9.5/100k)
2004 - 88 (11.6/100k)
2005 - 96 (12.8/100k)
2006 - 86 (11.5/100k)
2007 - 100 (13.6/100k)
2008 - 99 (12.3/100k)
2009 - 47 (5.8/100k)
total - 589 murders

I didn't know the murders were that high in SF, it seems to have more of a "safe" view... but I guess not? Maybe some of those are filtering over from Richmond/Oakland?
Not sure...

I'm visiting SF right now.
I much prefer Manhattan. It's nice around here, I visited the Golden Gate Park which was great. I guess I came at the wrong time since its been rainy and chilly here while its a sunny 70 degree easter day out in Jersey.

You can just see that Manhattan has a more excitable feel to it.

Manhattan has a more excitable feel than anywhere! I love it there...

While you're in SF, though, make sure you visit:

Union Square
North Beach
Chinatown
Mission District (get a burrito there)
Haight-Ashbury
Lower Haight
The Castro
The Marina
Alamo Square
Civic Center
Fillmore District/Pacific Heights

Avoid Fisherman's Wharf!

I moved to Manhattan from Palo Alto, CA. Much prefer Manhattan to SF, but Manhattan does feel an adult/yuppie theme-park.

Nothing wrong with it though. It's fabulous, safe, visually stimulating, the best shopping/restaurants/food/nightlife/culture and you can never get bored. It doesn't hurt that I live in stunning SoHo.

After NY, SF/Chic comes in at #2/#3, IMO.

Yeah SF's bad side is worse than many people realize it seems...and sure some murders have other bay area residents as perpetrators or victims, but most are SF residents, more or less the same as any other city and their ratio of resident/non resident perpetrators and victims. It's funny how some people automatically assume that SF's crime must be due to Richmond or Oakland, though i guess it's natural if you never knew SF had some pretty serious crime problems of it's own in parts of the city (SF's violent crime rate is actually almost as high as Richmond's, another fact many people are unaware of. 2008 violent crime rates: SF - 1,024.1/100k, Richmond 1,074.9/100k).

from 1985 through 2009 SF had 2,150 murders and averaged 86 murders a year. The worst years were:

1993 - 133
1992 - 117
1986 - 114
1995 - 105
1987 - 103
1990 - 101
2007 - 100
2008 - 99
2005 - 96
1991 - 95

SF also made it up into the 150 range a few times during the 1970's, though i can't find the exact numbers right now.
