Well darn. I voted for Alaska because I saw one of their license plates in person today. Must have been an older plate.

It was plain, but it said "The Last Frontier"

I kept thinking "they screwed up the Star Trek quote"

But in all seriousness, my favorite is Delawares:

Love the colors

I'm a little biased to the East Coast since these plates are the ones I see the most (I do see Illinois and California plates with alarming frequency though). I'll put up ones that really stand out outside of the EC.

My favorite plates are (no particular order):

-Maryland (favorite plates. The SUV/minivan is really ugly though since it replaces the state flag seal with an "M.")
http://www.statesymbolsusa.org/IMAGE...censePlate.jpg 10/10 http://www.mva.maryland.gov/bin/m/z/baynew.gif (broken link) 10/10

-Pennsylvania (see this one a whole lot. the old one wouldn't have been on the list, but the new one looks much nicer, and less like West Virginia's. from a distance I always confuse the two)

-Connecticut/New Jersey (both of these are almost boring, but the fade effect and nicknames prevented that. It's not pretty at first but Jersey has kind of grown on me since I see it far more than any other plate, except maybe Pennsylvania)
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...ense_plate.jpg 8/10 http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...ersey_2008.jpg 7.5/10

-DC
http://www.coinnews.net/wp-content/i...ense-Plate.jpg 8/10

-New York (second best in North)
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi..._York_2001.jpg (broken link) 9.5/10

-South Carolina (beatiful and unique plate. one of the best in the country, second to only Mississippi in the South)
http://www.southernconnector.com/ima...te_250x129.jpg 9.5/10

-Mississippi (best plate in the south. if only the state was this appealing)
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...ense_plate.jpg 10/10

-New Hampshire/North Carolina (best slogans)
Moderator cut: link removed, linking to competitor sites is not allowed

-Rhode Island (the best license plate in New England, never get tired of seeing this one)

Ugliest plates:
-Delaware
-Vermont
(I don't like the dark backgrounds on either, and Delaware's couldn't have a more boring font)
-Massachusetts (not really ugly, but too plain)

South Carolina, closely followed by Texas. In fact it took a minute to decide, Texas is that good!

Anyway MOST states have decent to good plates; New Hampshire, Florida, South Dakota, New Mexico (always decent), Illinois, Maine etc. I am utterly shocked that my own New York State did not mess this up either, although I do not think people can see thats Niagara Falls, the Adirondacks or NYC up there while driving. Should be more than two colors.

The attractive (and patriotic) North Carolina plate is very noticeable when seen in the NYC area, at least for me.

Tennessee's is the loveliest that I have seen, followed by the new SC plate.
