nyc is suffering just as much as Chicago if not worse in this economy. especially with nyc's high cost of living where the middle class new yorkers can only afford to stay in the public housing projects. Chicago is way better in that respect. jobs are scarce everywhere but at least in Chicago with a middle class & even a lower class income you can still live in decent housing here. i love my city thru thick & thin. CHICAGO ALL DAY BABY!!!! THE WORLD'S GREATEST CITY!!!

Do you have any proof that Chicago is the worlds greatest city? Because I have proof that NYC is the best city in the world.

It always makes sense to go where there is a JOB no matter how ****ty or menial. Substitute teaching is the ****-work of teaching and for that, New York City and Philadelphia are still hiring.

But yes, do apply online first....see which place will at least CALL you back. Out in California where everyone wants to BE for some reason, there is nothing. No Wal-Mart ever gets back to you, no McDonald's, no Burger King, no Carl's Jr, and so on, and so forth.

New York State is also still testing periodically for their ****-level government civil service jobs. That's no guarantee of a job unless you want to work in Albany, but even that is something California doesn't have.

It's sometimes either take a menial **** job or have nothing and starve to death if your state doesn't have general relief and food stamps.

The unemployment rate is 9.3 but its 8 million people in NYC compared to 3 million people in Chicago with a higher rate. I agree come to NYC the economy is way better.
Thank you. As a Biology major looking to start as a sub and then get a NYS teacher license...I wouldn't touch Chicago with a ten-foot bayonette. There are other states where the cost of living is lower and may have the same or easier teacher licensing requirements as New York City but then there would be NO JOBS unless you "knew someone." That's what people from all those other "lower cost of living" states tell me.

Oh I wouldn't try security, since I'm 5'1" and Native American and as such no one takes me seriously even standing in front of a classroom wearing my black pinstripe suit, at least in real bad ghetto-trash areas. But I could look into it and see if there were any "mild" security-guard assignments that a petite little woman could do. I might be better off competing with illegal-immigrant men for dishwashing jobs.

New York is far better. Chicago is very corrupt politically. You have a corrupt mayor with his hand out all the time. The County, and State is very corrupt, just increasing taxes all the time on the Middle Class. New York has their problems too, but at least we don't have the highest sales tax in the country, and a Mayor that's not ripping off his own people. Good Luck !!!!
