We are from Hawaii and we decided to move in the mainland since the cost of living is too high and there is no jobs in our area. We are considering Arkansas or Missouri. We have kids and both work in a healthcare field ( registered nurse and Physical therapist) . Can anyone advice us on which of these two state is better in terms of the cost of living and employment. Thank you!
I think both are very affordable places to live. However, since you are in healthcare, I would suggest Missouri. St. Louis has some of the best hospitals in the nation, such as Barnes and Cardinal Glennon. They also have a large pharmaceutical and medical school presence.
Missouri has larger cities, which may be good if you are in health care.
I love Missouri, but Arkansas is okay, too.
But as far as jobs, living near a city may be best. And Missouri has St. Louis and KC, and a couple other cities over 100k (Springfield and Columbia). As mentioned, Barnes-Jewish is ranked as one of the best hospitals in the nation.
Both states have the Ozarks and a lot of nature to enjoy. I know for a fact that the Missouri Ozarks are beautiful.
The winter weather will be colder either way. And both states seem to be pretty humid in summer. Missouri winters aren't as bad as Chicago or Minneapolis, but you will get a fair amount of snow and quite a bit of cold.
Try posting this in the Missouri and Arkansas forums. You can get some opinions from both sides that way.
Both are extremely affordable. As far as jobs go, I would have to say Missouri because it is more populated and has 2 good-sized metro areas: Kansas City and St. Louis. You are bound to find numerous healthcare related positions in either city.
Hawaii is nice to visit but highly overrated to live there and work.
If you want to be near an urban area, Missouri by a longshot. Arkansas doesn't have any real cities. Healthcare jobs should be easy to come by in either state. Arkansas is very popular with older retirees so the medical field is bigger there than most people think.
Oh no, not the "real cities" thing again...although not as large as the two Missouri cities, Little Rock is the capital of Arkansas (pop. 200,000/metro 900,000) and is most definitely a real city.

That 900,000 metro includes small towns 2 hours away because people really do commute that far to work in Little Rock. The true "metro" population of Little Rock is only around 340,000, hardly a real city.

That is just not true...the Little Rock MSA is 680,000. The CSA is 900,000. Please don't post false information. And God knows no one commutes anywhere in St. Louis or Kansas City. The Little Rock metro area is 4000 sm while the St. Louis metro area is 8600 sm. Which one do you think offers the longest commutes? These are facts, so let's drop it.
I don't want to argue about what makes a "real city". That's a stupid argument to begin with...but even a small metro of 340,000 is a city.
I wouldn't recommend either. Especially coming from hawaii. I moved from Souther california to Missouri and I am having a very difficult time adjusting.
I spent some time on kauai, and I told my wife the place reminded me of a tropical West Virginia. Not sure what island you are coming from, but The Carolinas or Maryland may be a better fit for you.
