Maybe we should first determine exactly what "Southernness" means in this particular context.

I think I'd put Winston-Salem at the top of the list as most Southern. I think I'd put Austin at the other end of that list. The VA cities would certainly be more Southern than the Texas cities. Daytona would be more Southern than Orlando in my opinion. I have never been to New Orleans...so, I cannot comment. Atlanta (and the greater metro area) will have parts that are very Southern and other parts that are not.

Winston-Salem, while definitely a southern city, seems very much like a Northeastern or Midwestern industrial city. New Orleans is the most southern of that list IMO, with Richmond a close second...of course, I see "southern" as a good thing - a compliment.

New Orleans
Richmond
Daytona
Orlando
Atlanta
Winston-Salem
Houston
Virginia Beach
Dallas
Austin (the only city on this list that I haven't visited)

Rank them for what purpose? And by "southerness" what do you mean?

What is the definition of southerness???

Here goes:
Geographically
Orlando
Daytona Beach
New Orleans
Houston
Austin
Dallas
Atlanta
Winston-Salem
Virgina Beach
Richmond

Stereotypically
Atlanta
Richmond
Winston-Salem
Virginia Beach
Houston
Dallas
Austin
New Orleans
Daytona Beach
Orlando

I don't even think the last 3 would fit in the stereotypical south.

That sounds about right. Austin is very Texan (as in cowboy hats, boots, Texas Country is big but not Pop or Southern Country) but not it's not very Southern at all.
