The Misconception: Orlando = Disney World. The Reality: is that Disney isn't even in the City of Orlando and there is in fact a completely separate lifestyle for those in the city and the suburbs.

There are always 10 feet of snow, cold weather, drug addicts everywhere, and shootings at every intersection in Chicago.

For Denver, the scenery may not be to everyone's taste, but it's not brown all the time. Unless you're on the outskirts and a few exception with in the city, I don't see how it looks brown/dry. I blame the airport because that's the first thing people see when they come into town. Dry yellow prairie.

That it rains 24/7 and is always depressimg. It really isn't in Seattle. It's very calm and relaxing in the winter months.

It's a suburb. It's low density sprawl. It's a giant Phoenix. It has no culture and no public transit. It's in a desert. It's a "3rd world city". You MUST have a car to live there or you will die at the hands of Al-Qaeda henchmen.

Truth is, Los Angeles is none of that! And even after I name those stereotypes in the misconception thread, people STILL will continue to state them as fact.

Funny how people call Angelenos ignorant by using ignorant stereotypes to describe them. Pot, I'd like you to meet my friend Kettle.

I have no sympathy for people of other cities. Because rather than acknowledging those stereotypes for what they are like they are more likely to do with other cities. In referring to LA they are used as fact.

Miami
misconception: crazy party city that's fun all the time
reality: outside of Miami beach, it's pretty ordinary

Atlanta
misconception: everything is a suburb, which makes it bad because it's not Boston or Philly
reality: yes, there are a lotta suburban areas, which you can avoid if you live in more urban areas. Don't see why this is such a major issue. IMO too much density is nerve wracking with all the people around constantly.

Dallas
misconception: cowboys, conservative, desert
reality: less than 10% of Texas is a desert, Dallas is in the prairie. Also it's very progressive and liberal, and people stopped being Cowboys in the early 1900s.

Portland & Austin
misconception: hipsters
reality: you need to learn what a true hipster is. Most of those people are just young people following a mainstream trend, which isn't what a hipster would do.

Seattle

misconception: it rains all the time
fact: it has less annual rainfall than New York, Atlanta, Philadelphia, or DC.

Misconception: it is cloudy all of the time
Fact: The cloud cover is a problem in the fall and winter months and even parts of the spring but summers in Seattle are dry, sunny, and beautiful.

Misconception: The Seattle Freeze. That is, people are impersonal and hard to get to know. It is hard to find friends in Seattle.
Fact: I made new friends everywhere I went when I lived there. The Seattle freeze is simply a myth.

Misconception: Seattle is the suicide capital of America.
Fact: Seattle doesn't even make it into the top 10 on this list. Los Vegas is actually the leader on this list.

Misconception: True Seattleites don't use umbrellas.
Fact: walk around the city on a rainy day and umbrellas are everywhere

I've lived in 3 other places besides Phoenix (Indianapolis Detroit and Washington DC) and its the worst place Ive lived.
Who thinks Phoenix is some kind of Eden? Flying into it, is looks like one big brown arid bowl, and landing in it, you feel like a pizza pre-heated to 425 degrees. There is very little that is attractive about Phoenix; the only redeeming quality it has is that it has a decent Feb. March with lots of fruit. Otherwise, I would take all three of your places metro areas that you have lived over it.

I thought Scottsdale was nice, very suburban but a nice area, and pretty green. Same with Tempe and the area around the University.

Well if you're coming from a place where there is ice and snow with a windchill factor, Phoenix can indeed feel like Eden. And I would add the good weather extends beyond just 2 months. It is generally pleasant from Oct. to May. As far as the brown arid bowl are you sure you weren't in Tucson instead of Phoenix? Many areas of Phoenix are lush. To each his own but I think your opinion is very much in the minority.
