My favorite ghost town is the one I found up in the mountains of Southern Oregon. It wasn't in any books/websites that I know of, so I don't know what the name of it was! This ghost town wasn't close to any roads you could get to by automobile and was totally untouched! There was still "stuff" in the houses/buildings (I looked through the windows!). And a big uncovered mine shaft in the middle of what obviously used to be its main street. Unfortunately I didn't have a camera on me so I have no pictures. I don't think I'd even remember how to get back to it if I tried. I'm sure I wasn't the very first person to "discover" it, but I'm also pretty sure not many other people have been up there. Definitely no looters or "hooligans".

Me too - I've always wanted to go there! I think we'd better both hurry because in recent pictures I've seen of it lately the buildings are starting to crumble and fall down out into the street.

Golden? If so, I live right by there. It's the one I was going to say... Actually, it's more likely to be Placer or Greenback since Golden is pretty accessible by road. The other two are more out in the middle of state forestland and harder to get to, involving a wee bit of hiking potentially.
