Which city has the most vanilla accent and people?
By vanilla I mean typical, average, normal, conventional, representative American population. I'm going by the average, not what city has the least colourful folk.etc.

I said St. Louis just because it's hard to tell if someone came from St. Louis just by talking to them. It seems like they could fit in just about anywhere. I imagine there are a lot of places like this, though, especially with all the transplants moving around these days.

The reason you don't notice a Saint Louis accent is because you are used to it. My mom had a very thich Dutch accent which I never really noticed.
I noticed a Saint Louis accent fairly quickly. The Nasal "A", Horses are "Harses", Forty is "Farty". People "Warsh" instead of wash, and dolls are "dalls". Just to name a few. St. Louis blacks also have a very distinct "black Saint Louis" Accent.
Southern California has a fairly flat accent, but does have vocal afflictions, especially among 16-30 year old women and surfers. Chicanos seem to be the only ones with a distinct accent
Nevada, Utah and Colorado also seem to have flat accents.

I can't believe New York is on this list haha....I mean, does it get any less vanilla for New Yorkers? Whether it's the accent or otherwise, I don't view NYC as "vanilla" in any way.

Oh yea, I totally missed Chicago on that list too...though their population could be considered more "Vanilla" than NYC's, their accents certainly aren't vanilla.

You know before I knew better I considered Chicago the cultural heart of Middle America, and believed the accent there was close to the standard used by newsreaders etc.

The people of Chicago struck me as kind of pretty average, Americans more so than any other large cities on the coasts. Not that is a bad thing, I did appreciate that middle-America/blue collar vibe about it and the people seemed pretty down-to-earth and more normal compared to places like LA, NYC, and SF. At least for a major city it's size but I'm sure smaller metros are probably a lot more average/vanilla.
