Both cities are obviously very important to our economy and national identity.

Dallas city has 1.3 Million residents with a density of 3,700 per square mile. It's Metropolitan area has 6.3 Million residents. Dallas has a GDP of 338 Billion Dollars and is home to 14 Fortune 500 companies.

Philadelphia city has 1.4 Million residents with a density of 10,700 per square mile. It's Metropolitan area has 6.4 Million residents. Philadelphia has a GDP of 388 Billion Dollars and is home to 6 Fortune 500 companies.

Overall I'd say it's pretty even as far as importance; though Philadelphia has a larger economy but Dallas has more than 2 times as many Fortune 500's.

I prefer Philadelphia's center city...it is much more cohesive and geographically compact; so I'd prefer Philadelphia; also I am biased since I grew up in Scranton.

Your Gross Product Info is incorrect. This is the latest available data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis(US Commerce Dept). Even at MSA level, Dallas' GDP is considerably larger at this point.

Have you considered that most of DFW's land are is sparsely populated? 85% of the people live in 30% of the land area. If you take DFW's core population area, it would be smaller than Metro Philly and with almost as many people.

What are the different parameters that DFW is receiving that the Philly metro isn´t? I was under the impression that the MSAs and CSAs all had the same parameters - that of percentage of commuters to the main cities. Either way, Reading and Vineland are included in these CSA numbers that 18Montclair provided.

The way I see it, both are indeed similar in ¨importance,¨ but if current population trends stay the same, and Dallas and Fort Worth finds continued success in infill and urbanization, it won´t be long before DFW steps firmly ahead of Philadelphia.

The Dallas Metro is nearly 11,000 sq miles . Philadelphias is 3,900 sq miles.What are you guys using to commute down there to justify a 11,000 sq mile metro? Rocketships.

Also How about the vacuuming parameter that is NYC. The city limits of Philadlephia and Trenton are 15 miles apart. Trenton to NY 70 miles. Trenton(Mercer County) is inexplicably a part of NYCs CMSA. Theres $50 M of GDP that should be in Philly thats not.
