Yes but as a whole, MO was never considered a Southern state.

Yes, for now. But then what do we do, for instance, when the NOVA influence starts penetrating more of VA?

Seems like everybody wants to be "Southern", anymore, as if it's a badge of honor. Some people say Texas feels like the South, others say Texas feels like the West, and others say Texas feels like the Midwest. And some say Texas feels like the Southwest. Some people even say Texas feels like Mexico. Bottom line is Texas is Texas and ain't no other state comes even close to being anything at all like it. Texas has no desire to be like any other state yet, I would venture to guess all the other states would love to be more like Texas. Most Texans consider theirselves to be Texans first, rather than Southerners, or Westerners. Texas is a category all to itself. God Bless Texas.

Everybody wants to be southern? Have you polled the northern half of the country?

Virginia isn't really authentic Southern anymore due to NoVA, and Florida isn't due to Southern Florida.
At this point it's probably Alabama or perhaps South Carolina.

I think there is those states that should be referred to as just " South" and states that should be referred to as the "New South."

The Southern hospitality you'll find in Mississippi, Alabama, South Carolina is different than the Southern hospitality you'll find in North Carolina, Georgia, Texas, Florida.

"New South" is a characteristic best applied to cities, not entire states. For instance, Charlotte and Raleigh are clearly New South, but not eastern NC. Atlanta is certainly New South; most of the rest of Georgia, not so much.
