Also, the liberal arts colleges in Ma are excellent.
Amherst College is usually number #1 or #2 in nation rankings of undergrad programs. Also Smith, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke, Wellesley, Bentley, Emerson (for communication), and some the UMASS system are regarded highly. Also Holy Cross, Worcester Polytech, Northeastern.
As far as specialty programs:
Boston Architectural College is highly regarded.
Berklee School of music is a top 5 music school, as is the Boston Conservatory.
Bard College at Simons Rock.
School of the Museumof Fine Arts.

I think it's a generally a wash, considering the breadth and depth of California schools versus the historical prestige of Massachusetts'. But California does rank well for graduate fine arts programs according to the US News and World Reports 2008 rankings.

UCLA comes in quite regularly in the top 10 in many of the categories, as well as CalArts, CCAC, and even good ol' Pasadena with the Art Center College's #1 ranking in Industrial Design.
Now, according to this site...
The USA's best architecture schools in research: 2009 | archsoc.com
...UCLA and Berkeley make top 10 for "research performance" in their architecture programs, but it's well known that Cornell is tops in that field so the criteria are to be questioned. (I do know UCLA has worked very hard in the past decade to better its program to match the Cornell benchmark, so the list may reflect its efforts rather than the full fruit of its labors.) However, San Luis Obispo is also traditionally top 3 in architecture and USC makes most other lists too, so California represents well either way.
Again though, it's just good to know we live in a country with so many globally ranked universities. Well...with our wealth we'd better! Stay in school, kids!
