I think it's more of an "if", like most buildings right now in our country

It is quite beautiful though, even if Pelli's designs get a bit redundant. Still classy as ever

Let me know...Pitts. I looked again..I think you're right...needs lighter colored glass...very light blue for instance...but it could be the lighting conditions. I like the new tower one person posted...impressive.
yes, that's the only building as tall as the pyramid.

Its definitely getting built-theyre just haggling over height. The City wants it to be at least 953'--don't ask me about that strange exact number. But its going to be SFs first 1000'.

The planning commission really dropped the ball as far as Im concerned. They picked that Pelli design over this SOM design

Just look at that base...WOW

Pelli's backers also offered $350 Million for the quarter block sized lot the tower is to be built on. The City couldnt refuse that--the others offered around $100M for the quarter block sized lot.

Which oldtimers will say is outlandish for that part of DT. South of Market wasnt always considered so pricey as it is now. LOL Heck Im only 35 but even I remember when that area was considered ghetto. Now its gone all upscale.

My office is located half a block away from the new Pelli at 560 Mission(also designed by Cesar Pelli)

^ Yea, i know. That design was INCREDIBLE. Totally draw Dropping. Its too bad money decides everything

I still can't get over it. Its just...sigh...damn. What a gem. Could and Would have went down as a classic of this era in architecture. So beautiful. Just stunning. I can't even express my frustration over it!

Good that Pelli's will get built though

I love the structural design of this tower...light, interconnected, flexible and variable to wind loads because of it's continually changing skeleton. A great addition to the skyline!.

And keeping with SFs longstanding tradition of shooting itself in the foot, it went with a lesser design.

As stated by Billiam, money talks I guess.

What a loss tho.

Agreed, what a waste.

I saw hints of the eiffel tower and the statue of liberty in its design. It would have been an amazing and iconic work of art/architecture. It still is if it manages to get built somewhere. It deserves to get built in SF because it would have been the centerpiece to the skyline, whereas in NY, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Dubai, it would get lost in the mix.

Unfortunately Boston has the same curse. However, our "lesser designs" are a result of our rabid NIMBYs. They harass every development in the city over a variety of issues including, but not limited to: solar glare, wind tunnels, shadows on their houses/streets, height in general, and traffic. They will also demand that new schools, parks, and other various neighborhood improvements be made for them...even if the development isn't in their neighborhood (for example, right now West End/North End residents are demanding a new school for themselves in hopes to block a development in Government Center). Recently there have been complaints about the height of a possibly 400-500 ft skyscraper and how it doesn't fit with the neighborhood...it would built directly next to my building, a 60-story, 790ft skyscraper.

Since all this crap happens, our skyscrapers are shortened...which requires them also to be fattened and a decrease in material quality in order to keep the project economically viable. It's a damn shame that such a "progressive" city has such a vocal group of residents that doesn't want any form of change.
