The Brookings Institution has some interesting interactive data regarding foreign students in The US, by metro area. New York, Los Angeles, and Boston are the top three cities in terms of total number of foreign students. One of the surprises to me is Buffalo, which ranks 14th in total foreign students.

For each metro, you can look at numbers of students in STEM enrollment, degree levels being pursued, foreign student retention, country of origin, city of origin, destination institution, etc.

In Minneapolis-St Paul for example , Hamline, Macalester, and Metropolitan State are the top three destination schools (The U of M is 4th). Seoul, Beijing, and Shanghai are, in order, the top three cities of origin.
