... and we won't even discuss my Grandfather, who was born in the Bronx, yet chose to move here, and then subsequently retire here.
but then, like I said earlier, I don't think Chicago is better than New York, I think that they both have their positive and negative points and for me it comes out as a wash (however, I'd be lying if I said I never looked at the new york rental ads wondering if I could pull it off).
Actually a vast majority of my friends in Chicago and my coworkers were all born everywhere else in the midwest/east and then moved here after college cause they wanted better jobs and a more active life. I've actually been here 7 years, and have only met 3 people at work/friends/activities who actually grew up IN the city of Chicago.
I only meant that if people think Chicago has more to offer than New York, then they were probably born in Chicago.

Well, "more to offer" is one thing. The thread title is "better", and depending on what you mean, many people may support that idea. I wasn't born in Chicago, but I think Chicago is better... for me!
New York DOES have a lot to offer. I enjoyed my time there! My brother lives there and I visit often, just as he visits here often.
He's actually considering a move to Chicago. We're not from a big city originally, and I think he digs Chicago. He likes the scale of Chicago neighborhoods and that I can afford to live in a neighborhood that contains bars and restaurants and grocery stores I want to frequent. In his particular part of NYC, he pretty much has to get on a train to get to the sort of joints he wants to frequent.
I'll say again that I think Chicago is more livable. Chicago is also, in my opinion, a better place to be middle class. For that matter, it's probably also a somewhat better place to raise a family. For the fresh-out-of-college and the well-of, NYC seems like the perfect spot.
Wow, looks like you've covered some ground there, as everyone knows that all of the major cities lay in the North East.
Umm...yeah...I don't recall ever posting that. My account has been hacked once or twice, so I guess that was one of those times. I have only been to DC, NYC, and Boston and my parents are not from Chicago. Mom's from Utica, NY and dad's from Poteau, OK, but moved all over the country, not staying in one place for more than six months. So yeah, I don't think that was me that posted that.

Uhh...i just noticed this after oilpainter pointed it out. So 4/5 of the top five most populous cities and 17/20 top 20 populous cities are not important?
