True. However some folks on the forums tend to confuse MSA/CSA populations with the total population of a general area. This is why I would like to see some land areas associated with these MSA/CSA areas being mentioned. We all agree that stating the city population without stating a city's land area is a half truth right? Well, shouldn't the same rules apply for MSA/CSA populations as well? I think so.

Anyways, I've given the land areas of the MSA/CSAs for my state in my first post. I would like to see the land areas of others as well as their populations. I think it would make this thread more interesting if folks would post land area too.

You can't always go off of land area either. Some areas have evenly distributed populations, while some areas have populations that immediately surround their respective cities.

Land Mass is a nice addition if folks don't mind.

I also calculated the density based on my guess for 2010's population.
SF City 46 sq miles/ 18,695 per sq mile
SF MSA 2473 sq miles/ 1,860 per sq mile
SF CSA 8756 sq miles/ 890 per sq mile

Correct.

Places just arent made the same and the dynamics definitely vary from place to place.

Won't even hazard a guess for Chicago's population, but I'll be curious to see if the city proper has gained or lost population over the past ten years.

2000 pop: 2,896,016
2010 pop: ???

Kansas City

City: 490,000
MSA: 2,200,000
CSA: 2,300,000

KC's CSA is stupid, even the MSA makes little sense because they include many very far out and rural counties that add almost no population to the MSA while closer in, more populated and more economically important to the region counties like Douglas (Lawrence) are not included.

If they ever agree to be in KC's MSA or CSA (so far, they have refused), then KC's MSA or CSA would increase by 100-300k. I wouldn't even care if it were not for the fact that other cities have CSAs that include cities like Lawrence and St Joseph and it makes comparing cities difficult. Either leave them out or put them in, but be consistent.

For me I think it's going to be hard to gauge what Atlanta's numbers will be. Even before the recession the population gains where dropping off in the MSA/CSA, but the city has consistently added about 15,000 per year.

I think next July we'll have a clearer picture where things will be for the official count, but here are my guesses:

Atlanta City proper: 570,000+/-
MSA: 5.8 Million
CSA: 6 million-barely-over
