I'm sure someone more knowledgeable of the mid-atlantic could point out plenty of gentrified rowhouse areas in Philly, Baltimore, and DC.
The point stands that deteriorated rowhouses probably are the most "ghetto looking" deteriorated housing form, due to their structural density. But there's nothing about rowhouses that creates a ghetto. It's just they were the predominant urban form in the mid-Atlantic, so as urban areas went downhill around the country, many rowhouse neighborhoods in those cities followed suit.
DC is different bc its ghetto parts aren't bombed out and abandoned but very populated. It's just real rough in Se, Ne DC because of the "sucker free" attitude of the hoods there. I don't see how ppl can live in dilapidated boarded up rowhouse areas where it's 1liveable home on a whole unit block.
nei what was the point of posting google maps links of nice areas with money in a thread about the ghetto?
My point was that narrow streets and having connected houses does not make a place a ghetto, there are many good areas that have these features. In fact, I think it might help those areas rather than detract. I don't really get what's negative about either.
Don't go naming whole cities and just parts of others. Either name each city as a whole, or name specific parts of each and all
no joke. i hate how baltimore gets such a bad rep. i grew up there, and granted it was a bad neighborhood, but there are some really nice parts of baltimore as well, and no one ever mentions it.
a lot of those areas in Philly and Baltimore look horrible because they are completely abandoned. Baltimore has the housing and infrastructure for twice the people than are currently living there. those neighborhoods may look really bad, but in actuality they aren't as dangerous as you would think. im sure the same goes for Philadelphia

I LOVE BALTIMORE. It's a real city. Screw the haters.
To me i cannot label a entire city as ghettho because somewhere in a city there is a concetration of well educated or at least people who care about their city and try to develop it to look neat. Even Detroit has some nice to okay areas( but many bad areas)
Im also suprised east st.louis was mentioned so rarely. Its lost more than 60% of its population ( more than Detroit) and its not a very large city (33,000 people) with no major companies so there is no point in moving there (unless you want to work at a casino)
