San Francisco is my choice. The most beautiful and charming big city in North America imo. Beautiful unique architecture, dense, walkable, compact, fantastic downtown, great nightlife, great restaurants, easy to get around with great public transportation. No car needed and no opressive heat and humidity in the summer.

More rain than L.A. in SF and I just felt that the people over there were better.
Also, I enjoyed the variety of restaurants over in SF and even went to Fisherman's Wharf. I even managed to visit the UC Berkeley campus one time and I have to say that it was HUGE! Another thing about SF is that their sports fans are probably more loyal than L.A. And much better public transit exists in SF. Some of the greatest heavy metal bands formed in the SF Bay area(Testament, Metallica, Exodus). SF rocks except that its too expensive unfortunately.

You don't have to hate Los Angeles to like San Francisco.
So much LA hate from Californians north and south of it.

With a user name of "Bono", I hardly think you should be making any judgments regarding the tastes of Americans.

FTW = For the win...I actually just found that out like two weeks ago myself.
Anyway, people were tweaking out earlier in the thread about the absense of New York City and I'm not sure why. It's obvious that 90% of the people here would vote NYC as the best US city, so why even bother to include it?
On topic:
The two best cities I've been to in the US, aside from NYC are Chicago and Boston. I've been to Chicago twice now, and I've loved it both times I've been there. I'd love to get the opportunity to explore the non-touristy areas the next time I'm there. The city has beautiful architecture and amazing parks. Standing in Millenium Park and gawking at the wall of beautiful buildings surrounding the park on 3 sides has been one of my favorite views of anywhere I've ever been.
Before people harp on me about choosing Boston as the best US City, let me throw out some reasons for the choice. I'm sure the fact that I've been able to explore the city more than any other influences my opinion, but whatever. Boston has some of the most beautiful and unique neighborhoods in the entire country. Tell me where you can find another neighborhood like the North End? It's a neighborhood completely dominated by the pedestrian. Other beautiful neighborhoods include Beacon Hill, Back Bay, Southie, the South End, Fenway, and Allston/Brighton. There aren't many neighborhoods in the country like those either. They're packed with beautiful classic architecture--often with unique styles in each neighborhood--and have walkability that is matched by very few other neighborhoods in the country. Boston Common, the Public Gardens, the Commonwealth Avenue Mall and Post Office Square are among the most beautiful parks in the nation.
Boston has great restaurants, great shopping options, and great hospitals (obviously). It's among the safest major cities in the country...when encompassing the MSA, it's one of the three safest major cities in the country. The fact that there are 250,000 college students in Boston and Cambridge gives the city in a unique vibe, especially if you're out near Longwood, Fenway, or Mission Hill. Students come from around the country and world to get their education in Boston so there's often a great mix of cultures. Surrounding the city is a collection of beautiful historic towns like Lexington (site of the Shot Heard Round the World) and Concord. For outdoor recreation, there are plenty of small mountains near the city and larger mountains in New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine. Beautiful beaches line both the North and South Shores, the Cape, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket.
That's why I think you could consider Boston to be one of the Best US Cities.
I once I go to San Francisco, I may consider it to be the best city outside of NYC. Everything I've heard about San Francisco is nothing but positive, aside from a possible over-population of D-bags. But aside from that, great architecture, amazing restaurants, unique landscape, breathtaking geographical surroundings, educated & diverse population. It sounds like an amazing city, I just need to go see it in real-life now!

There is plenty of LA hate on this forum. Even Atlanta has more votes than Los Angeles which explains that personal biases rather than logic seem to motivate some posters.
Los Angeles is head & shoulders more important & influential over every city on the list [and rivals NYC as well]. People the world over know about Los Angeles but would be hard pressed to recognize most of the other cities listed.
