Number of murders divided by the population X 100,000 = murder rate.

25.3 ranks it with Youngstown and Wilmington.

Before the 1970's, New Orleans' murders had not been 200+ and the 1960's New Orleans had less than 100 murders a few years.

25 homicides in the past 24 hour period for Ciudad Juarez. Now it is past the 2,100 mark for the year.

Wow LA has come a long way since its gang banging reputation earned during the 90s. Chicago has 100+ more murders with a million less people.

One thing that makes LA's numbers stand out is that they include justified homicides and accidental shootings or cuttings in the total unlike a majority of jurisdictions.

Dallas, TX - 108

totals for same time-frame

2009 - 112, year total = 166
2008 - 108, year total = 170
2007 - 145, year total = 202
2006 - 147, year total = 187
2005 - 148, year total = 200

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Houston, TX. - 180

lol...death via accidental cutting? good luck telling that to a courtroom!

i find it hard to believe that there's enough accidental shootings/"CUTTINGS" in any given city to be statistically significant--especially in a city as large as LA.

Not specially pointing to accidental shootings or cuttings mainly just the justified homicides, and with those going on raw numbers alone LA would have a lower number if they didn't include those. Since raw numbers are what jurisdictions keep track of the most since the media mostly harps on raw numbers instead of rates or stats.

And you'd be surprised how stupid some people are with weapons or anything that can cause someones death.

ALL justified homicides are included? I didn't know that--that may in fact cause LA's stats to be misleading.

Interesting same as D.C until 1969 and never looked back until now but I thought before 1970's was the 1960's

the peninsula (mostly hampton and newport news) have been heatin it up with murders these past couple months. its been relatively quiet in other places besides virginia beach where there were recently 4 stabbings in one weekend, inculding a tourist at the beach that gets randomly stabbed in the throat.

Four stabbings reported in Va. Beach over weekend | HamptonRoads.com | PilotOnline.com
Update:

Richmond - 29 (14.1/100k)
Norfolk - 26 (11.1/100k)
Newport News - 18 (9.3/100k)
Portsmouth - 11 (11/100k)
Petersburg - 7 (21.2/100k)
Hampton - 10 (6.9/100k)
Chesapeake - 5 (2.2/100k)
Alexandria - 2 (1.3/100k)
Suffolk - 2 (2.3/100k)
Virginia Beach - 8 (1.8/100k)

as you can see, the murder rates clearly flunctuate from city to city, good to bad. with alexandria being the safest, to petersburg being the worst by a mile.
