World!? Even with 29 murders, it would actually put it as one of the more violent cities in Europe. It would be about right on par with Canadian cities.

Kind of crazy that our safest big cities still qualify as pretty violent when you look at them in a European context.

Or just about any context. Most countries in Asia and Latin America are nowhere near as violent as America... poverty does not equal violence. Monetary access to guns and a mentally ill culture do.

That is why recognizing the safest city in the United States is like recognizing the smartest student in a remedial class. I still feel safer anywhere in Japan than even San Diego.

San Diego averaged 49 per year from 2000-2009, plus the SDPD crime numbers only show 25 for Jan. 2010-Dec. 2010

Not really. European cities like Dublin or Glasgow have similar rates -- and far higher violent crime in general than San Diego. Those are just 2 examples.

That is true about Asia, but statistically the Latin American countries have the highest murder rates in the world. As of 2009, the only country in Latin America with a lower murder rate than the US is Chile. If you include Jamaica as part of Latin America, then the 5 countries with the highest murder rates in the world are there:

As of 2009...

El Salvador- 71 per 100,000
Honduras- 67 per 100,000
Jamaica- 59.5 per 100,000
Guatemala- 52 per 100,000
Venezuela- 49 per 100,000

And with everything thats been going on in Mexico in the past few years, it wouldn't surprise me if they're in the top 5 now too.

No not really. Chile has about 3 times less murders than the US and Argentina and Cuba are pretty much tied with it. Most of the rest are less than 1.5x more murderous in terms of rate. The only reason America's murder rate is as low as it is because of states with no population density whatsoever like Iowa/Nebraska/Dakota/etc. Take those out and the urban areas are as equally or more murderous than the urban areas in these latin american countries with a few exceptions, the difference being that in rural latin america there's little crime of any sort. Iowa has the highest rape rate in America... rural latin america not so much.
