Whoa that's 5 less than what my "district" in NYC saw. Good job San Diego (although 0 would be optimal).

How would San Diego compare with the Japanese cities of Tokyo, Yokohama, or Osaka?

Very unfavorably. Tokyo's murder rate is usually in the 0.2 to 0.3 per 100,000 range.

“I’m absolutely astounded at 29 total homicides for a city with a 1.3 million population,” said Mayor Jerry Sanders, who was the city’s police chief from 1993 to 1999. “That’s just unbelievable to me.”
The San Diego mayor is a moron. Calgary had 10 murders one year when it had around 900,000 people.

Toronto averages 60-80 murders with 2.7 million people. That's about the same rate as 29 with 1.3 million people.

29 on 1.3 million is an alright rate, but it's not impressively low. There are cites with per capita rates less than half that.

It's very safe compared to Tijuana, I think Tijuana had a 59/100,000 murder rate last year.

I believe half of our (Philadelphia's) homicides last year were drug related. That's about the fraction each year. The rest are "arguments" stemming over whatever the shooter felt "disrespected" over. In the lack of monetary capital and role-models, people will take to whatever other forms of respect they can garner to keep their self-esteem up. This leads to a lot of deaths over petty arguments in poor hoods.

The violence here isn't really going to go away unless those problems are alleviated which, I don't think anyone has the will to do it right now.

So if you break down Philadelphia's murder rate, for the poorer demographics in which they are taking place the murder rate is really heartbreaking.

So far this year we stand at 25, which is about in line with the last few years, slightly higher.
