We compare because both cities had 4 murders on the four of July, because both cities get about the same number of murders every year, and both cities, i'm sure are neck and neck in the number of people that have been killed to date. Why not compare?

Yes, this is normal , but nothing serious like mayhem ..... Of course it serious, nobody deserves to get killed and have there life taken away from them. I'm sure you knew what I ment, if not sorry for the misunderstanding. The numbers and stats show in the hot summer months the murders double or even thriple in most American cities. Here are some stats.

Chicago 2009 Murders by Month
Jan-24
Feb-25
Mar-20
Apr-41
May-47
Jun-46
Jul-57
Aug-51
Sep-42
Oct-37
Nov-36
Dec-37
------------
463 murders

See how the number double and even thriples in the summer months(april-september) and the cold months get less murders? This is normal and happens year after year.....in most American cities.

I've heard reports of 2008 ending with 511, but I was only able to count 510. Either way, it's one of the two.

It is not normal when NY's murder increase is over 11% this year which may be higher than both Los Angeles and Chicago's percentage combined. Overall crime in NY is down barely 1% but grand larceny is down over 7% and that is the main reason crime is down. If you excluded the grand larceny crime would be up overall. Murder is up, assault is up, rape is up, robbery is up, and burglary is up. If you think it is not serious you are wrong.

Most recent official statistics for Los Angeles are up to July 3, 2010.

Total murders: 151 in the city (2.7% increase over 2009)

Total Violent Crime is DOWN 11.3% as of July 3.
-Rape down 13.9% from same date 2009
-Robbery down 8.9%
-Aggravated Assault down 14.7%
-Homicides up 2.7%

Total Property Crime is DOWN 6% as of July 3:
-Burglary down 8.6% from same date 2009
-Grand Theft Auto down 7.5%
-Theft from Vehicle down 1.8%
-Personal/Other Theft down 7.8%

An important category, gang related crime, is down 9.7% over 2009. A ton of crime, and most murders in L.A., are by gang members. The city becomes safer and safer as the LAPD challenges these gangs, breaks them up, and works to enforce the law to make the streets safer.
