2010 Chicago city Murders
242 murders as of 7/18/10

2009 Chicago city Murders
243 murders on 7/18/10

By the end of June 2009 Chicago had 203 murders, by the end of June 2010 Chicago had 216, 13 more murders then last year, but July of last year had a violent start thats why it surpassed this years murders by one.

40 people were killed from the start of July to 7/18/09, while only 26 people have been killed so far this month, thats why last years murder tally caught up to this years murder count.

Last year's July had 58 people that were murdered, as of 7/18/10 only 26 people have been killed this month.

2010all

2009all

Chicago seems to be getting safer, could it be there's no more gun ban in the city?

I don't think that has anything to do with it, the gun ban was JUST repealed, and the city inacted an immediate work-around. Something like 74% of the murders in this city are gangbanger on gangbanger. They don't give a crap about gun laws - they already all have guns.

Violence in general has been going down for 18 years now, along with murder. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact they tore almost all the projects down in the past 10 years. Those areas took up a fraction of the actual city, but had a HUGE amount of crime.

It seems that crime here is actually getting a lot more press in everyday life than it use to in the past. Regardless that violent crime is down 65% and murders down 53% since the 1990's.

NY is up 15.4% as of July 11th. At 252 as of July 11th. As of July 18th I am guessing around 270 but NYPD does not release stats quickly. Also making headlines in NY, NYS Governor Paterson "yanks valuable crimefighting tool."

Harsh lesson for N.Y.: Paterson yanks valuable crimefighting tool from NYPD

The most random incidents have to do with the hate crimes this year. A drastic rise of 80% compared to last year. (Staten Island gay couple latest victims of hate crimes as bias attacks spike)

Plus mob wars come and go just like gang wars. There were rumors in 2005.(Is a Mob War Approaching? - Gothamist)

And more recently news of a jeweler who gets murdered over "disrespect."
(Jeweler gunned down for dissing high-ranking member of Genovese crime family: feds (http://www.nydailynews.com/news/ny_crime/the_mob/2010/07/15/2010-07-15_jeweler_killed_for_dissing_mob_say_feds.html - broken link))

It is still a very safe city overall but this is a year of an obvious rise. It is not going to spike to its point in 1990 in just one year and we do not even know it will reach that point ever again.

Of course there are bad areas of any city... but when a city 1/10th your size has similar amount of homicides it puts things into perspective of HOW BAD other cities really have it.

thats just about any city.

D.C. has had 67 murders this year so far. For a city of 600K thats higher than average and even though its down from last year, people in NE and SE D.C. don't see the difference.
